When I got home my parents and older brother were buzzing around the house like worker bees, no one seemed to want to sit still. They hardly even noticed when I walked inside.
My brother, Trevor, was only a year older than I was. He was adjusting to our new life much better than I was. You would have thought he had been born with a silver spoon. He had been running with the pretentious Kook crowd for months now.
"Oh good, you're home," my mom said, looking at my outfit. "You could use a shower."
"Sorry, we were all out at the beach late and then I crashed at Kie's, but I came home as soon as I woke up. I didn't want you guys to worry."
"Thanks, sweetheart," my dad said, kissing the top of my head as he passed by, carrying jugs of water with him.
"What's going on?" I asked, noticing my mom was also prepping.
"Hurrican Agatha changed path and is coming straight for the Outer Banks. We're trying to get everything ready."
"So, go shower while you still can," my mother reminded me. "Put on one of those pretty dresses I got you, and fix your hair!"
I groaned as I made my way up the stairs, going straight for the shower. I knew she wouldn't let up, it was easier just to do as she said.
As I turned the water on, waiting for it to heat up, I looked at my reflection. I wondered why I was feeling the way I was. Maybe I was going insane. I looked the same, but the feelings I had were growing every day it felt like.
I had known JJ for years, ever since I had moved here in the fifth grade. My parents had wanted to become a part of the tourist fishing groups, thinking it would be a gold mine. It wasn't. That's how we landed in the cuts. I went to the only public school and quickly made friends with JJ and John B. Two of the only people nice to the new girl. Then, they introduced me to Pope and Kie, and we have been a group ever since.
But I had always been closest to JJ. Kie and I were super close in our own way, being the only two girls did that. But, between JJ and I, it was like there was some unspoken chord attaching us. It was him and I always beside each other, I was always talking him down a cliff and he was always hoisting me up one. The opposites attract bullshit. But, it had never been more. Never. Until a year ago, something inside me snapped. It was like one morning I woke up, and bam, butterflies. I thought I had been coming down with a stomach bug at first, I stayed home for days. But, it had only ever come up when he was around. That's when I faced reality, I had fallen for my best friend. In short, I was a dumbass.
My reflection stared back at me, blue eyes meeting blue eyes. My hair was longer than its ever been, reaching all the way to my lower back. My mother hated it. She preferred a short chic bob, those were her words. She said it was professional.
"Hurry up in there Morgan!" I heard my mother call after me.
I snapped out of my thoughts, hopping in the shower, and doing my routine.
Once I was out I put on cutoffs, a tank, and flip flops. I chose to forego the sundress. We were prepping for a hurricane for God's sake.
My mother rolled her eyes when she saw me.
"Why do I bother?" she asked.
"Not sure," I said, rolling my eyes back. Ever since we moved to Figure Eight she had all these new expectations for me. New ambitions that I would never reach.
"Mom don't waste your time on her," my brother commented.
When she turned around I gave him the finger, which he gladly returned.
