Newt doesn't ask questions about why I changed my mind and I don't think he cares. We're not safe here and with our luck something is bound to happen.
"What's the plan?" I ask after what felt like hours waiting for his shift to end. We didn't want to raise suspicion so Newt stayed on his shift till it was over.
"I told Phil. They're good people and I wanted to explain why I wouldn't be showing up for work anymore." I nod looking back at our neighbors who offered us jobs. They smiled back at us holding hands.
"I asked them if they wanted to come. But they said they were too out and too content here."
They liked the known and we were venturing off to the unknown. How fun.
"We can just walk through the doors right?" I thought back to when we first came here.
He shakes his head, "They really aren't supposed to. James has access cause he bought off the guards. He always come back and ahem he does he comes back with more people. It makes their job easier and they know he's not someone they have to worry about."
"Let's talk to James then. Maybe he can get us out."
We venture towards where James stays. This place is almost built like the maze. The houses made into scattered sections and ending abruptly after a wrong turn. Not to mention it's built in a huge circle so you could walk it for hours and never see an end. It's a miracle when we find the small but James lives in but then yet newt used to be a runner and he helped mapped the maze when he was one of the only people there. Why do I miss the glade so much?
James' "home" is the same size as ours, standard for family but it still amazed me how he fit his wife and two kids in there with him when newt and I just fit in ours.
James came out at the sounds of our voices with a welcoming smile, "hello! What can I do for you guys? Come! Meet my beautiful grace."
A small slender girl steps out right behind him. She's beautiful. Dark brown hair that's almost black. Pin straight and long. Her heart shaped face gives way to large hazel eyes and a small nose. She smiles at us child like and takes newts hand between her hand like she's so excited to meet us, "James told me of you guys upon his arrival. It's always nice to see some young couples around here. I love to see families blossom." She beams at me.
"Oh....uh." Newt splutters, his cheeks turning red.
James sighs with embarrassment but let's out a light chuckle, "Gracie they're teenagers. Let them live their lives. Stop trying to push children on people you don't need to be a grandma that bad."
"It's never too early in this day and age. I mean what's the point in waiting you know?" She looks at me, "the younger the better you'll have more energy."
I laugh, mostly at newts bewildered reaction, but also at her youthful joy and love in this barren world, "it's lovely to meet you grace, my name is Carly."
"Beautiful name for a beautiful girl."
"To what do we owe the pleasure?" James purses his lips clearly trying to divert the conversation away from babies when his wife looks like she's about to continue on.
"Yes, maybe we should talk more privately." Newt says looking around. Leaving here was a big deal. An option that no one had and people didn't take it too lightly.
James shows us into his place and I notice that Michael and Matthew aren't here and see a sad look on graces face. A box in the Corning is filled with belongings and I wonder if they were still here. Maybe that's why grace couldn't stop mentioning kids? My stomach thinks at the thought.
