I watched as number 473 fell to the ground. I scanned the area once again before leaping off the rooftop. I carefully rolled on a patch of soft grass and got up in one fluid motion, brushing dust off of my dress. I sauntered over to the body. The courtyard was silent, save for the muffled sound of the party raging behind the courtyard's southmost wall. I let a celebratory smirk escape me before quickly composing myself and plucking the small white note out of my jacket pocket and placing it into the man's hand.
I don't consider myself particularly cruel and l I'm not particularly fond of watching people bleed out...so I ended his suffering by stepping on his trachea, and if I'm being honest the crunch was a bit satisfying. Don't worry though, I made sure that my shoes stayed clean.
I immersed myself in the shadows until it was safe for me to blend back in with the party. As the abrasive sound of music and the sticky heat from dancing bodies engulfed me, I secretly felt relieved. Yes, I'm an assassin. No, that wasn't my first choice in career path.
What was my first? Now that's a secret I'm taking to the grave.
I left the crowded party and mounted my bike, letting out a small huff of irritation when the silk fabric of my dress slid up my thigh. I tugged it down and started my engine. I heard a shrill shreak in the distance. "That's my cue." I thought as I sped off.
———-
I raced into the garage, stopping abruptly as I reached the wall. I clenched my fist in frustration and let out an angry huff of air.
"1:47:03" My head snapped in the direction of the voice, it belonged to Tyler.
I dismounted my bike and shot him a glare.
"Bad kill?" My head snapped in the direction of the voice. "Never." I curtly replied as I glanced over at his bulky frame "Really?" He asked, raising a thick eyebrow at me. I walked past his muscular form and into the building. I heard footsteps behind me and I squeezed my eyes shut in frustration.
"What is it Tyler?" I asked cooley, turning to face him. He shot me a smirk and motioned for me to follow him. I raised an eyebrow and reluctantly let him lead the way. I have known Tyler for around three years and we often worked together, much to my dismay. I prefer to working alone, it's so much easier that way.
The cold nature of the stone building welcomed me and the only sounds that could be heard in the empty hallway were the clicking of my heels and the sound of Tyler's boots on the marble floor.
As we continued walking the sound of laughter and forks and knives clinking grew until we approached the large mahogany door.
Tyler opened the door and I held back a shudder as the warm air collided with the cool air. My eyes flicked over to the dining table. Isn't it funny? A bunch of assassins sitting down and sharing a meal.
Or, I should say Agents. The chandelier above the table illuminated the room with a warm glow. I find it amusing that my coworkers can be so jovial after an assignment. You'd think there'd be more tension in a room full of assassins.
As I entered the room the laughter died down. They knew who I was, and they feared me. I subconsciously scanned the room for any threats and locked eyes with the only face I somewhat trusted at the table. Kaia. Kaia reminded me of a friend I used to have, before the...incident.
Kaia got up excitedly and handed me a small envelope. My eyes quickly scanned the table, noting that a few others had this envelope laying unopened on the table. I took the envelope in my hand and I looked at Kaia who was nervously ringing her hands. I felt motion behind me as Tyler walked over to Kaia and kissed her forehead. "You all can open them now." Kaia's usually confident voice wavered as she spoke.
I carefully peeled back the small sticker that held the envelope closed off and took out a small letter. My heart sank as I read and reread the gold text."I'm pregnant". Three Syllables. Two words. Ten letters.
I heard the cheers of fellow assassins as they got up to congratulate the couple on their pregnancy, but all I felt was anger. How could anyone be so selfish as to bring child into this lifestyle? I suppressed my anger for the sake of maturity and gave a quick congratulations to the happy couple.
"I didn't know you could experience any emotion other than rage Mara." I heard a sarcastic voice comment. I shot a glare at Dylan "Call me that again and I will carve your heart out". Her face went pale, I wasn't being serious, but she didn't know that. I folded my hands in front of me and focused my attention on Kaia.
After a few minutes passed, the excitement died down and I was able to slip away from the dining hall. I headed to my office and filled out a mission report. It was an easy job, standard kill, 473 was your average drug dealer turned human trafficker. After I finished I made my way to my living quarters. Every agent was given a suite that consisted of a bedroom, a living room, and a bathroom. I entered my suite and scanned the room, locking the door behind me. I pulled off my gloves and habitually checked all of the places someone could hide, before placing my gun in its' safe .
As I entered my bathroom I let my hair out of its usual bun. My coily hair held onto the hair tie as I struggled to get it out. Finally I got it out and let out a sigh. I unstrapped the several knives, darts and tools that were strapped to my body before slipping out of the silk fabric of my dress.
The cold air nipped at my skin as I ran a steamy shower. I glanced at my reflection and frowned. I used to look so much happier. My thoughts drifted elsewhere as my reflection began to fog up. I got in the shower and conditioned my hair, gently running the conditioner through my curls. As I rinsed the conditioner out, my mind began to wander to an upcoming mission.
It would be the most challenging mission I've been on in a while and that excited me. The plan was to infiltrate a banquet hall and intercept an awards ceremony. It wasn't going to be easy and in preparation I had been pushing myself in training. I was beyond prepared. I applied some conditioner and let it sit as I washed my body. I finished detangling my hair and watched as the conditioner swirled down the drain.
