"Well, I appreciate the hospitality, Gavin, but it seems I've found what I came for, so my mate and I will be going now," Zane said to Alpha Gavin before reaching out and grabbing me by the arm.

Sparks erupted where our skin met, enveloping my entire body with an intense, but comforting warmth. My knees felt weak, and my instincts were pushing me to get closer to this man...this Alpha, who I'd only just met.

Despite my wolf pushing me to give into this bond, no questions asked, I resisted.

"Excuse me?!" I snapped at him, attempting to yank my arm out of his grip to no avail.

Zane froze before directing his attention back towards me, "Did I stutter?"

My jaw dropped. This man really thought I would just bow down and submit to him because of this bond we apparently shared? He was in for one hell of a surprise.

"Now, Zane, I think you should –," Gavin attempted to intervene.

"This is a matter between my mate and I Gavin. It does not concern you," Zane quickly cut him off, raising his voice a bit.

"You don't even know my name, and you just expect me to go away with you and do as you say, no questions asked?" I piped up, feeling a bit angry now at not only the way Zane was treating me, but the way he was treating Alpha Gavin as well.

"Obviously," Zane quickly retorted.

I glared at him before yanking my arm back again, attempting to free myself from his grip once more. This time, he loosened his hold on me, allowing me to break free.

"Listen," I started, staring him dead in the eyes. I was attempting to assert myself despite the fact that my entire body felt like jello the moment our eyes met. "I'm here because of my job. I'm here to help Alpha Gavin at the request of Alpha Ryder, and I intend to do just that. I'm not going anywhere with you. I have a job to do, and I'm going to do it. You and I have a lot to discuss."

Zane laughed, seeming amused by my assertion. "You have a job, I get it. I take my job seriously too, but other than that, there's nothing to discuss. You can finish whatever work you have to do here, but then you're coming home with me. You're my mate – my pack's destined Luna, and you belong there with me."

I was speechless for a moment, both because I was surprised that he agreed to let me stay and finish my work in Gold Wind without a fight, and because I hadn't even thought about what this all really meant until he'd said it.

I was supposed to be a Luna.

I cleared my throat, trying to regain my composure. His words had weakened my front, allowing the connection and feelings associated with our bond to break through.

"It's not that simple," I finally spoke, my voice much softer this time.

Zane laughed again, although this time, there seemed to be anger laced with it. He took a step towards me before quickly reaching out and grabbing my chin, forcing me to look him in the eyes again.

"Then enlighten me," he spoke, his voice velvety smooth and his lips only inches from my face.

My thighs clenched involuntarily as heat soared through my body once more from his touch, his words, and his very close proximity. I'd underestimated the mate bond – I'd never anticipated it would be so unbearably strong.

For a moment, I wanted to tell him. Everything radiating between us begged me to tell him.

But I couldn't.

If I told Zane about Bennett, he'd explode. He was an Alpha male who'd just found his mate, after all. The emotions of an Alpha were much more intense than those of the average male wolf – they were stronger, much more possessive, and sometimes volatile. Alpha Zane in particular, was known well for his rather sadistic sense of humor.
