THE THREE POGUES DIDN'T FEEL RIGHT being on the marsh in the HMS Pogue anymore. After realizing that Ward was still plotting, even after having the blood of two teenagers on his hand, the trio just couldn't act like things were normal. Pope announced he had to go back home and make things right with his parents again, but he promised he would meet back up before Sarah's funeral in two days. They all decided they would attend together, both as a way to respect the life of Sarah, who they had all become pretty close to in the past weeks, and as a way to put pressure on Ward. Maybe if he saw the Pogues, he would be reminded of what he did.Kiara could only hope that Ward would be brought to justice in time. She couldn't stop thinking about John B and Sarah's name. She was not going to let her two best friends die for nothing, and she swore it to herself that she would make a legacy for them.
They docked the HMS and Kiara hugged Pope goodbye as he made his way back home. Kiara thought about her parents and how they definitely knew she was missing by now. At first, she wondered if they were worried about her, but the Kie remembered who her parents were. Even if they didn't expect her to make a run for it, they definitely weren't going to act on it. Her dad was always too busy on the wreck to care about what Kiara was up to, and her mother was too caught up in her social image to project the actions of her rebellious teenage daughter into the world. Calling the police to have them look for Kiara meant alerting the rest of Figure Eight that Anna couldn't keep her daughter under control, and her mother couldn't have that. And god forbid if Kiara was found at The Cut, associating with the Pogues. No, Kiara knew her mother. She would wait for Kiara to come home.
Kie's relationship with her parents was always fluid. She loved them and they loved her, but they were never seeing eye-to-eye, and Kie had come to accept it. Her parents had given up on trying to micromanage their daughter, letting her run free with whomever she wanted as long as she was safe and out of trouble. In exchange, Kiara would put up a presentable front in front of the Island's elite, so that Anna could work her way up the Figure Eight food chain. It was a twisted family dynamic, but it worked for them.
Kiara sighed. She hoped her family at least knew that she was alright.
Her and JJ made their way back into The Chateau just as the sun started to dip underneath the horizon. They grabbed two beers from the fridge and decided to watch the colors drain from the sky as they sat on the porch. JJ tore down the yellow caution tape left behind from the police that surrounded the deck, giving the pair a clean view of the marsh ahead of them. "Have you been staying here?" Kiara glanced at JJ.
"Most nights. They were bagging more evidence the first night or two so I snuck into the hotel and slept there. But other than that, yeah." JJ took a sip of his beer. Kiara couldn't help but notice that he had consumed quite a few beers since she had been with him. For the most part, he seemed unaffected by any alcoholic influence. Maybe his tolerance had gone up.
"Christ, JJ. You know you could have stayed with me," Kiara offered, trying to give him a safety net that she wasn't sure he would take.
"You know that isn't true, Kie. Your parents are Kooks."
Kiara let out a breath she didn't know she was holding. JJ was right, her parents would not have accepted him into their house. As much as it killed her to say that, she knew it was the truth. Her disappointment in her parents must have been obvious, as JJ continued talking to tear Kie away from her thoughts. "It's all good though. The hotel had some food sitting out in the kitchen that I stole and The Chateau has remained pretty quiet since. Besides, I like it here. It reminds me of John B," JJ offered Kiara a smile.
It was refreshing to see JJ smile, even if it was only for Kiara's reassurance. He had been so tense since the night they lost John B, and Kie just wanted him to have some peace of mind. Still, Kiara couldn't shake the feeling that there was more to JJ's anger and tension than just John B's death. "I miss him. A lot," Kiara admitted. She had done a lot of thinking about John B since he died but not much talking. In a way, it felt good to talk about him. Almost as if it kept his name alive.
