Serena Kingston has lived in the Outer Banks all her life. Her parents shared the same childhood. She knew nothing outside the OBX. All her life, all her memories lied in the island. She knew the island like the back of her hand.. all except the cut. The cut is where the working class lived. Her parents always told her not to associate with them, to be specific, the pogues. All sixteen years of Serena's life she had been sheltered. Her parents were very supportive, but at times she felt suffocated. She truly lived inside a bubble. Her life was just a series of repeating chapters. She couldn't even stand her own friends half the time.
Serena isn't the nicest girl, she's seen as rude and an overall bitch. Perhaps to why she is always referred to as Kook Royalty. Sarah Cameron is one of Serena's closest friends. Their parents have been friends since high-school. Serena and Sarah were inseparable as children. But as they grew they realized they were very different. Sarah Cameron hated the kook vs pogue cliche. She didn't understand why they couldn't just get along. Sarah's boyfriend, Topper, had very similar opinions as Serena. In fact, Serena had a slight thing for him before he started dating Sarah. Serena got over it and accepted the fact that Sarah always got her way. Sarah and Serena were very competitive friends, well maybe it was one-sided. Whatever Sarah had, Serena strived for. It was exhausting for Serena but it kept her on her toes.
Serena had never worked a day in her life. Her parents were well set in money, her dad owned his own dentistry on the island. She had three siblings: two brothers and a sister. They owned a beautiful home in figure 8. Although Serena didn't really need a job, she did tutor kids. She would devote some of her time to help kids who struggled with school. She never had a problem with school, most people just stereotyped her as a dumb blonde. While in reality, she was at the top of her class.

It was ten o'clock on a Thursday. It was finally summer and the air was humid. Serena had woken up to her family's nonsense. Her younger brothers: Parker and Hudson, were running around the house. They were twins, both 12 years young. Her sister, Isla, was 14. Not too much younger than Serena. Serena had turned sixteen last fall, her birthday was not too many months ahead.
Serena's eyelids fluttered open. She inhaled and the scent of bacon flooded her nostrils. She leaned over to her side table to grab her glass of water. The glass met her lips and she took a swig.
"Serena! Come down, sweetie. I made breakfast!" her mother yelled at the bottom of their staircase. Serena stood up from her bed and messily put her throw pillows back onto it. She rubbed her weary eyes and slipped on her favorite slippers.
Serena's hair was a mess, and her breath was hot. She sluggishly made her way down the staircase. Her parents smiles greeted her as she entered their dining room.
"Finally!" her dad exclaimed.
"Did the princess get her beauty sleep?" he questioned.
"Yes, I did" Serena paused. "Daddy we should really invest in an elevator." she whined.
Her parents chuckled and passed her the fixings. Her family all discussed their plans and activities they had in store. Her siblings about chatted their parents ears off.
"What about you, Serena?" her mother asked, her voice soft.
"I was going to just sit on the boat and catch a tan." she mumbled, food still in her mouth. "Daddy is that one pogue going to be working on our boat today?" she sighed. Their family had hired a few of the 'less fortunate' to help make their ends meet. One of the boys was John B. Routledge. He was the pogue leader, but was sort of cute for a dirty pogue. Serena would never admit that to anyone, but she still thought it. "Yes, I do think I have one of them scheduled to work today." he replied, picking at his eggs. Serena's father checked his phone. "I've got to go!" He scoot his chair back and came to kiss all of his families heads. He saved the smooch on the lips for Serena's mother.
Moments later they were all excused to go about their day. Serena rushed upstairs to plan her day...
