The day was exhausting. I could barely sleep. I just kept reliving the moment I decided to step in and be a 'hero.'
As promised, I made my way back to ma's much earlier tonight. The house was pretty dark when I got there though, maybe she turned in early. I went inside and locked the door behind me. "Ma?" I called out.

The girl from yesterday came walking out from another room. This was the first time I really got a look at her. She had long, dark hair and bright eyes. She smiled at me, and it made it look like her pale skin was glowing. I coughed a bit into my hand before speaking. "You're still here, huh?" I asked.

She walked closer to me. "I am. Oh, uh, Settrigh?" She said. I scoffed at her before chuckling. "Sett. No one calls me Settrigh 'cept my mother." I said. She looked down, face a bit red. "Sorry. I-I didn't know. Anyway. Thank you for last night. Who knows what those guys would've done to me after they were, you know... finished." I watched her closely as she talked. Her innocence almost felt refreshing to me.

I looked over onto the kitchen, just to get my eyes off her. I wasn't going to see her like those guys did. "They would've killed you. Or taken you with them to use again." I spoke with my voice quiet, just incase momma was awake. "Trust me. I deal with scumbags like that all the time. Ive been aroun' the block a few times, but I ain't gonna use a girl who said no. Not everyone's like me though." I sat on the couch. She stood there, her eyes looking at the floor and she bit her lip. Nervous?

"Oh, uh. You mom said to tell you sorry. She was just really tired. I offered to help her around the house for her helping me and we did a lot of cleaning and projects." She said, almost sounding proud of herself. I looked around again and saw that things had been rearranged a bit and looked better than it had in a while. I had wanted to help her with that stuff, but running the pit all night and sleeping when I can through the day made it hard.

She walked off into the kitchen and came back with a plate of food, setting it down in front of me. Double helping of meat and some veggies. "I saved you a plate. I dont really know what you like, but you look to me like someone who likes their protein." She laughed a bit. I raised an eyebrow before thanking her and eating. I hadn't realized just how hungry I had been.

She sat in a seat a little ways away from me. "Sett?" She said. The sound of her voice saying my name made my chest feel weird. Like the feeling before a fight, but knowing I won't get hit. I looked over at her and raised another eyebrow. "Will you teach me how to fight?"

I almost choked on my last bite. "And how do you know I can actually fight and I didnt just get lucky?" I said. She smirked a bit, then reached behind her and handed my coat back. "I may have been caught off guard, but I'm not a stupid women. Please. I know I'm not really strong right now but I'm a fast learner." She was on the edge of her seat. I sat back and sighed. "Listen, I don't think I'm the right person for you for that. Have you seen me? You saw what I did to those assholes. That was nothin' to me. Like flickin' a bug off your clothes." I stood and took my plate to the kitchen and set it in the sink. She followed behind me.

"How am I supposed to learn if I don't start at the top? Its all or nothing. And you're the all." She said. I turned and looked at her, and I saw the look in her eye. She wasn't gonna give up. "Alright. But you cant back out. Got it?" I said, pointing a stern finger at her. She smiled and practically jumped with joy. "I am not a quitter. I wont let you down! Thank you!" She hugged me. She was warm. It was like time stopped and slowed down. I reached to hug her back but hesitated.

No girl can make me weak, I can't let that happen.

I put my hand on her shoulders and pushed away slowly, just enough so she could look at me. She blushed heavily and took a step back. "S-sorry! I'm just excited." She said. "Dont worry. So uh, whats your name anyway?" I said, almost struggling to find words. "Oh. That would be a good place to start. Im Kalina." She said. I nodded. "Good to know." I walked over to my moms room, leaving the usual bag of coin and giving her a kiss goodnight. She stirred awake and smiled at me. "Hello my son." She said. I smiled at her as warmly as I could. "Hey, ma. Im glad that girl could help you out. I think she's gunna come live with me for a while." I said before I could stop myself. She closed her eyes and settled back into bed. "What a wonderful idea. Tell her thank you for me. I love you."

I gave her one last kiss. "Love ya too, ma." I left as quietly as I could. "Kalina, let's go." I said. She looked surprised. "If you wanna work at this, its a 24 hour job. You gotta live it like I do." She looked down at the dress she was wearing. "But-" she started, I interrupted her. "We'll get you clothes and return that later. Come on, I ain't that patient." I started for the door and she followed.

What the fuck have I gotten myself into?
