I woke up in the afternoon and heard something moving around outside of my bedroom. I shot up and opened the door, ready to fight when I saw the girl standing there with a broom in her hand. She smiled at me and raised an eyebrow.
I relaxed a bit and scratched the back of my neck. "Sorry. I aint used to having a girl here. Or anyone for that matter. I didn't scare you or anything, right?" I asked. "No, don't worry. You must work a lot, this place needed a good cleaning. No offense. But I got as much done as I could. Are you hungry?" She said as she put the broom away. I didn't even know I had a broom.
"Uh, yeah sure." I said. She turned without another word and went into the kitchen. I looked around at my place. It hasn't been this clean in I dont know how long. I'm not a slob but a lot of the time I just can't get around to it.
I looked at the time, it was still pretty early morning. Usually I'm not up until late in the afternoon.
She came back a few minutes later and handed me a plate full of scrambled eggs. I looked up at her and raised an eyebrow. She was blushing again.
"Hopefully you like it? It was all I could really find to make breakfast out of. I already ate, I wasn't sure what time you'd be up..." She looked at the ground away from me. "Thanks. It looks good." I said. She smiled and blushed a little harder.
Looking at her was like a breath of fresh air. She was so kind. Unlike anything I was used to. Well, aside from my mother. But this girl made me feel so different. She didn't look at me like everyone else did. She wasn't afraid of me.
She sat next to me on my couch as I ate. I glanced over and noticed her chewing her bottom lip, and it felt like my stomach dropped into my ass. I shoved the rest of the food into my mouth so I have an excuse to walk away. "Oh I can take it if you're-" she started to say, but I cut her off. "I got it!"
When I dropped the plate in the sink, I cursed to myself. I dont want to yell at her. She doesn't deserve that. Maybe bringing her here was a mistake.
I gotta tell her to leave. I'll just keep hurting her.
As soon as I had that thought, I turned around to tell her. But as I turned and took a step, I felt something hit my chest. I looked down in time to see her starting to fall. I reached out and grabbed her arm, pulling her back up into me and held her.
We stood there for a moment. She looked up at me and I felt my stomach drop again. "I-Im sorry..." she said. I held her a bit tighter, my body wouldn't let me release her. It was like I wanted her closer to me. "Don't worry. You gotta be more careful though. I'm a big guy, i coulda trampled you." I said.
She smiled and then looked down at my chest. "Hey, uh, Sett?" She said. I realized I was still holding her. I slowly took my arms away and stepped back. "Sorry. I aint used to people being so close." I said. I moved past her before she could respond and sat back down. "You comfortable bein' here alone? I gotta go... to work tonight. I wont be back for a while." I said.
After a minute she appeared in the entryway between my living room and kitchen. "Sure, as long as you don't mind me cleaning a bit more. You could use a 'women's touch' around here." She said. I raised an eyebrow at her. "Do whatever you want, just don't touch my room." I said sternly. She walked over and sat next to me again. "You have a really nice place. Did you live here alone before me?" She asked. I scoffed a bit. "I dont do too well with people around me constantly." I said.
She sat there for a moment. "Well, thank you. For letting me stay here that is. I dont have money to pay but I'm more than willing to cook and clean for as long as you let me stay here." She said. Money is usually my biggest motivator, but if I was being honest with myself... I don't want her to leave. So I'll have to accept her offer.
We watch whatever bullshit is on TV for a few hours and she makes dinner. She insisted I sit with her at the table in my kitchen that I never use. "So whats your story?" I ask. She looks surprised. "Oh. It's kind of a long one." She says. I lean back in my chair. "I got some time." I respond.
Kalina takes a deep breath and puts her fork down. "I was an orphan. I was born here in Ionia but I was told my father was from Piltover. My mother was Ionian though. Thats all I know about them. I stayed in the orphanage until I turned 18 and then I left. I went to different places, pubs and where ever I could doing odd work for meals or a home for a few days. I learned a lot of stories from the people who have traveled all over. I learned songs. I learned how to be a good housekeeper and how to help master chefs. It felt amazing to get out and travel and learn for a long time, but after three years I started to crave something more. I wanted to settle and make roots somewhere that I could call my own. It wasn't long after that when you found me with those men... and you saved me. Now I'm here."
She finished talking and looked into my eyes. Something inside of me twisted. I know how she feels. After my old man left, I Just wanted to belong. Everyone mocked me because they thought I had no protection anymore. "I'm honestly surprised that you made it on your own for that long. So you're what, 21 now? 22?" I asked. She giggled a bit. "I'm 22. Today." She said.
I nearly fell over in my chair.
