Horseback Riding

I took the reins and started the simple walk. Chase kept by me and our hoses whinnied to each other like they were talking. Sean was behind me and JJ was behind Chase, Anti was behind Sean, Marvin was behind JJ, Robbie was behind Anti and Jackie was next to Robbie. I heard everybody talking to the person next to them, so I talked to Chase.

We were going on a trail and just having fun, when Jackie trotted up next to me and kept my pace. I let go of the reins and put my hair in a pony tail. Jackie talked as I did that, and everybody looked a little jealous. Does everyone want to ride by me? I jumped a little when Buttercup shook her head. I look at her and then at the trail. It was the one where we would go for runs. It was flat and paved, kind of like a sidewalk, but it said only horseback can go on there. I patted her maine and braced for her taking off. I bent slightly forward and gripped the reins farther up. She loved doing this whenever we get the chance. I look back and see that everybody was confused. I smile and say one thing.

"Catch up if you can."

I take off like a bat out of hell and I hear only the slight panting of Buttercup and her horseshoes on the pavement. I kept low because the branches would clip my head off if I didn't. I heard a second set of hooves and saw Jackie and Pistachio. I laugh because this was a slow trot for Buttercup. I saw Jackie try to keep up but Pistachio get tired. I knew she wouldn't give up, so I slowed Buttercup to a trot. Jackie slowed too and his hood was down. I reached over and pulled up the hood with both hands. He was astonished that I could do that, so I explained how I could do that.

"You want to know how I can take my hands off the reins at any time," I asked him. He nodded with curious eyes.

"My family bought a beautiful female Shire to be bred with the male Shire that we already had. They had this beauty that I'm sitting on. When Buttercup was still a foal, she became very sick and couldn't walk. My father wanted to put it down, but I used Penicillin and she got better, but she didn't know how to walk or even stand. I took time out of my day to teach it how to stand. She slowly learned, but I never gave up. Within a month, she could run. Within that month, we became best friends and she got my trust, and I got hers."

"That makes sense. Why did you just take off like that?" I chuckle and see nobody behind us. I stop and turn her around so we're walking back to them.

"Buttercup loves the path. When we got to the farm for the first time, I didn't have livestock, so I didn't have anything to do. I took Buttercup down the path that we were on, and when she saw pavement, she shook her head. I let her run as fast as she could until we had to go back. She loves to run on pavement, I don't know why. When we go on this path, she always runs." he nodded and hummed in response. I gave him facts about the horses that everybody else was riding, until I came to Arthur.

"What about Arthur?"

I stiffened and remembered what happened to my brother. Tears pricked my eyes as I recalled the sight.

"H-he is an Arabian horse, just like the rest of them. Mine is the only one that's different." I sniffled and rested my head on Buttercup's neck. She could sense my pain, so she guided herself while I let go of the reins and wrapped my arms loosely around her neck. He saw that and started apologizing.

"I'm sorry. I didn't know that it would be a sensitive topic to talk about your brother's horse."

"That's fine. Like you said, you didn't know. I haven't told anyone about my brother. Not even Sean, and he's my best friend." I sniffled and held in my tears. I continued but turned my head so I could see Jackie's face. My god he was cute. I tried hard not to blush when he looked into my (e/c) eyes.

"I gave JJ that horse because he is mute, so he uses sign. My brother was deaf from accidentally not wearing ear protection on the loudest tractor that we had. Arthur learned signals, like the patting and small heel tap. My brother named Arthur what he's named because he wanted to be King Arthur so much. One day, we went for a walk with our collies. He walked out across the street to go meet our friend that also lived on a farm, when a truck sped down the hill and hit my brother head on and didn't stop driving. He was mangled and his face was bloodied." I stopped and cried lightly into Buttercup's maine. He reached up and patted my thigh. I felt a little better and went on.

"They never caught the person. I believe it was the rival farm that we hated, and they hated us. My family wanted to sell Arthur, but I took him when I moved out, which was a week after. Every time I look at Arthur, I think about him. I want him back, but at least I have the best friends in the world and the best livestock who loves getting pet, and the best horses who don't care if they get tears on them." I let another tear slip out. Not out of sadness, but out of joy.

We went back to the start of the trail and they were waiting there. I trotted up and told them to follow me back to the farm. Jackie stayed by my side until we got back. I was smiling all the way, until I remembered that I had to give the cows shots, along with the lambs and piglets. I hated doing that to those little ones, but it's either hurt them for a second or let them die a slow and painful death. I got off my horse by just jumping down and landing on my feet. I patted her an led her to the stall that she slept in. I filled every horse's buckets and gave Arthur and Buttercup treats because I love them the most, but decided that all of them needed one for behaving. Especially Oreo. I went out and found Henrik. He could help with the shots.

"Could you help me with some medical assistance, Henrik?"

"Sure, vhat is it? Your scars?"

I thought about the cuts that healed and now are a light scar. I then remembered Marvin.

"Yes and no, do you have cream to help with that, and the other thing is with livestock."

He got out scar cream and I told him to come with me so I could prep everything. We went in the medical cabinet, but Chase was already there. I was very worried. There was tranquilizer only for the most meanest livestock in there. I went up to him and shut the cabinet. He jumped and turned to me with a syringe in his hand. I gently grabbed his hand and pulled the syringe away from him. He let me take it away and I handed it to Henrik, who told me it was tranquilizer. Chase collapsed to his knees and sobbed into his hands. I got on my knees and gently took his hands in mine when he put them down.

"Why," I asked when he was lightly crying.

"I-I wa-want it to e-e-end. No one loves me an-anymore."

"All of us love you. Hell, even the livestock love you. Everyone and everything loves you on this farm. Your kids love you." He looked up at me and hugged me tightly. I hugged him back and helped him up. Henrik put the syringe back and hugged Chase.

"Ve all love you. Nobody can tell you ozahwise."

He sniffled and wiped his whole face with his shirt. I walked with him to the house and put him in the guest bedroom. I can't leave him in the cabin. He needs help, and that's what going to happen.
