"eh, i really don't want the audition. i don't want to be a part of a knock off goonies show. it seems so bland. and to be the main character? no." chase told his agent.
"cmon, chase. this could be it for you... this could be your show." the agent told him.
"four friends on a treasure hunt? i dont want to touch an iconic piece of cinema, like the goonies, and destroy it. i have to say no. that's my worst nightmare, doing a bad reboot, ya know?" chase responded.
"you need to do it." ryan responded.
"nope, not doing it." chase replied.
and not even a week later, chase was living off of unemployment in LA. los angeles is an expensive place as it is, so to not have a job there could ruin your life.
so that's when the role of topper came in.
"i really think you should at least audition for topper." ryan told chase. "i mean- at least you're not one of the main characters."
"fine. i'll read for it." chase huffed out, taking the paper from ryan.
-
chase had completely bombed his read for topper. he had a lot of family stuff going on that particular day. and he got a parking ticket while at the audition. it was really not his day.
he had forgot all of his lines, and even apologized to the casting director before he started.
leaving the casting office, he had a thought in the back of his mind of 'oh i'm gonna get dropped from my agency for that.'
-
a week later, chase had gotten a call from his first agent that he had, saying she had a project she wanted him to audition for.
"i have this project i'm working on called outer banks. would you wanna read for it?" she asked him. "they're still looking for someone to play john b."
"ah, i really dont. i know it's just a goonies reboot." he told her. "and i think i just butchered every relation with this show because i bombed the role for topper."
"i've known jonas my whole life. we're really good friends. i'll send you the first episode. read it and i'll send you the materials."
"okay, i'll give it a shot." he laughed, saying goodbye before hanging up.
he sat in his small bedroom, reading the pilot episode of outer banks. by the end, he loved it and was pissed at himself for messing up the first time. so he decided to call her back.
"yes, yes i absolutely want to read for this." chase told her before she could even speak.
"i'll let them know." she laughed. "they'll let us know if they're interested by friday since the show is starting to ramp up production."
so chase sent it in that night and by friday, didn't hear anything from them. it was easter weekend so he hoped that's what their reasoning was.
so he went to brunch with a bunch of friends so he could drink mimosas and drown his sorrows. he got a phone call from ryan, so he excused himself from the table to answer it.
"what're you doing?" ryan asked, getting straight to the point.
"well... happy easter." chase laughed.
"happy easter- are you available right now?" he asked.
"yes." chase hesitantly said.
"i'll call you right back then." ryan said, hanging up. chase went back to the table, thinking of the possible things ryan could need to tell him.
"are you okay, man?" one of his friends asked him.
"uh- yeah i uh-" he started but got cut off by his phone ringing. "sorry, i need to take this." he said, excusing himself from the table again.
"you're getting on a flight." ryan told chase as soon as he accepted the call.
"okay, when? tuesday, wednesday? next week?" he asked.
"tonight." ryan responded. "tonight, 10:55. you're taking a red eye to charleston. i'm sending you 19 pages of dialouge. it's the first four episodes. you need to leave for the airport right now."
-
chase was sat in 33b, in the very last row of the plane, in a middle seat, on a red eye flight. he had to read the whole first four episodes of dialogue throughout the night.
when he got to the airport, he realized his credit card charge for the flight had gone through on his debit card, and it had overdrafted... so he couldn't even get an uber from the airport to the hotel, so he resorted to calling his mom for help.
"mom? this is really bad." he said to her when she answered the call.
"what?" she asked him, concerned.
"i'm in charleston-"
"what, why?" she asked.
"i'm here for maybe a job... probably not but can i borrow a hundred bucks?" he asked her.
she agreed so he got an uber from the airport to the casting office. he was obviously bummed when he got there because of everything that just happened.
