Phineas was asked to go into questioning with the police officers. Four hours of uninterrupted questioning, four hours of Phineas pleading his innocence.

I mean, I wouldn't know. I wasn't there. But I had a pretty good hunch he was. All I know is as Phineas argues his innocence, the rest of the group deals with the shock of what just happened by sitting at a German restaurant in Bed Stuy, discussing everything that just unfolds as I finger the lip of my third gin & tonic.

"What the fuck?" Parker rubs her head. "Phineas?"

"I just- I can't believe it," Hanif says stubbornly.

"I mean, you have to," Aidan says darkly, "There's no one but Phineas's family that manufactured that drug. How else was the poison administered to her? And not to mention, the Yeongs despise the Santiagos."

While Phineas and Luciana have been in the same friend group for pretty much forever, the same can be said for Phineas and Luciana's parents. Luciana's mother originally hailed from the Waltons, a massive conservative political family that's not too big on immigrants coming into America- especially wealthy immigrants taking up spots on Forbes list.

When the Yeongs first relocated to New York, everybody became threatened by the sheer power of foreign money coming into American soil. The resentment, especially from the Waltons, becomes even more bitter when Phineas's uncle, Toby Yeong, starts running for congressman against Luciana's family. The feud turned especially ugly when a racial hate-crime by the Italian mafia threw eggs at Toby during a political rally and while no one could confirm the Santiagos were behind the hate-crime, everybody had always known it had something to do with the feud. Regardless, despite Luciana and Phineas's friendship, it's been rumoured the Yeongs have been itching to hit back lately.

And I know poisoning is not at the same level as throwing eggs and calling someone a racial slur but I know what hate can do a person. Or rather what it can make a person do.

"It just- it can't be him," Hanif swallows painfully, "There's gotta be some kind of explanation here! Why, why would Phineas poison Luciana?"

"The evidence is staring at you right in the face! You heard the detective- no one else in the world makes this toxin!" Parker folds her arms at Hanif. Of course, Parker is so quick to dismiss Phineas. They were never really close. Not to mention, Phineas was the number one competitor to Parker when it comes to academics.

Both of them are the only honour-roll, scholar-tie wearing students of the Elite. I mean, I could be on the honour roll too but I have purposely kept my average at a non-susceptible B plus throughout this year at Kensington. Just so that the Elite doesn't know how good I am at Physics or Chemistry. Or that I have a 2380 on the SATs, which is a near-perfect score.

"Guys, relax," I say, my warm voice like butter melting, like the morning sun spilling through a window, "We don't know for sure yet. Hanif is right. Phineas is our friend- we shouldn't be so quick to think that he's the bad guy."
