Five years later

Today is Asher's 31st birthday and he took the day off work.

Our family has grown and we have two boys, Joshua and Elijah. Joshua is two years old and Elijah is 7 months old. Yeah, I'm sure you can tell by now that my plans didn't exactly work out as I had hoped but the reality is still more than I ever could have hoped for.

After our first date, we went on several other dates before he declared that he was in love with me and would make me his wife one day.

I had to wait quite a while for that to come true because he wanted me to finish my studies and not just my undergraduate degree but my honors and master's degree as well. I completed the last two degrees each within a year and I can only blame that on the sweet incentive that Asher had promised me upon completion of my studies.

As soon as I submitted my thesis Asher had me planning my dream wedding, which I did with the help of my mother, sister, Tawni, and his mother. It has been a blissful three years of marriage for us and I couldn't ask for more.

I fell pregnant with Joshua nine months after our wedding. I took one look at my baby and decided that I wanted to be a hands-on mom just like my mom had been.

Don't get me wrong there is nothing wrong with being a working mother, even Asher's mother continued to work after she had kids. However, there are slight differences between our relationships with our mothers.

My mother and I have a very close relationship, to a point where I feel comfortable telling her everything and it's not just because I'm a girl but my brother and her also share that relationship. Whereas Asher's mother was there for everything and loves her children dearly but there are some things that Asher would not feel comfortable discussing with his mother.

I am making breakfast and hoping to surprise Asher with breakfast in bed. My little monkey, Joshua is already up and trying to get his hands on everything, so I put him on his booster seat with a couple of his toys on the tray. I have another surprise for Asher, I'm pregnant with baby number three so at the bottom of the plate with his pancakes, I wrote in syrup "Daddy to 3" I hope he picks up on it. "Okay, buddy let's take this to daddy," I say to Joshua. "Daddy!" he replies.

I make my way to our bedroom and thank my lucky stars that Elijah hasn't woken up yet. My poor hubby must have been exhausted considering that he is still asleep at 8 am.

"Happy Birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear daddy, happy birthday to you!" He wakes up slowly and has a smile on his face as he places the tray on his lap.

"Thank you, baby."

"Daddy! Happy badday!" Joshua shouts.

"Thanks, bud. Come here and give daddy a hug." He complies and at that moment it's like Elijah can sense that we are having a family moment without him because the baby monitor alerts us to his wailing.

"I'm gonna get him. Don't eat the food till I get back and keep Joshua away from it." I leave him with a kiss. I quickly get Elijah and change his diaper all the while hoping that Joshua doesn't get his hands on the writing in syrup on the plate.

When I get back to our bedroom, I see that all is well except for my husband who has tears in his eyes. "Is this what I think it is?" he asks, and I nod my head as I sit beside him on the bed.

"I love you, Jenna McLaren. Thank you for loving me and giving me these beautiful babies." He kisses both our kids' heads then kiss me. I'm too choked up to say anything, so he continues, "Can I be honest? This moment right here is one I feel blessed to have."
