She was sitting at the corner table at the cafe, furiously noting something in that colourful diary of hers. Her eyes, lined with a hint of kohl, were a unique colour - brown - But like the colour of honey.
She smiled at something. She must have thought of sometime witty. After going through what she had just noted down, she resumed writing.
She holds the pen in a very weird way. She rests it on the ring finger rather than the middle finger. Her wrists are bare unlike most girls in the cafe. No watch, no bracelet, no bangles.
She stops again and smiles at the waiter who served her usual order : smoked Chicken Sandwich with a cold coffee. She continues writing after he leaves, taking periodic breaks to take a bit or a sip.
As she pushes the only lose strand of hair behind her ear, I notice she's wearing her favourite earrings, the ones I gifted her last month.
Her hair is pulled into a tight bun. She's going to complain of a head ache later.
Suddenly she looked up and saw me watching through the window. Smiling, she waved, signalling me to join her.
I smiled back and went inside. I took a deep breath as I stepped into the cafe and walked towards my crush, my best friend of 11 years.
"Hey! Why were you waiting outside?" She asked me as I sat opposite her at the small table.
"Nothing. I was just looking at the cafe." I wanted to say 'At you'.
"It's beautiful, isn't it?" She said as she sighed and looked around. We have been coming here every weekend for the past 2 years. It's become our spot.
"Yes, beautiful." I said without looking around. She is beautiful, adorable. I wanted to ask her if she found me interesting too. Instead, I asked, "So, what's up?"
"My boyfriend's you-know-what" she said and giggled.
I smiled even as my heart broke. I giggled with her as she confided in me the details of her weekend with him. It was similar to what I fantasised often.
I made witty remarks about her love life and she giggled at those too, soothing my aching heart.
"You are so funny. Tell me this bestie, You are smart, you are cute, you are adorable, you are not a nagger. How come you are still single?"
"The one I love is already taken."
"The one you loooovvee? How come you never told me about this? Tell me his name at least. I'm your best friend. We share everything." She was genuinely upset.
"There's nothing to tell. That one is taken. That one will never be available for me." I said. How do I tell her? How can I ever tell her, when she assumes the one to be a HIM? How do I tell my straight best friend that the one I love is her?
