It was late afternoon. Liu had gone briskly through the middle of town, even passing right next to her without realizing, and out into the fields beyond.
Concerned, Sarah had followed at a distance.
Liu had continued on into the hills past the fields. There she waited out of sight at the base, waiting for him to return.
It was a long time before he did. And he didn't stop at all, he went straight back to the village.
Once she was certain he was gone she went up the hills herself, wanting to see what he'd been doing.
It was on top of the third slope she found it. Facing towards the village, with a view of the beautiful dusk sky, was a large stone.
The front of it was flat, and a message had been written on it in white chalk.
