Her name would forever echo in my ears... Annabeth.
Gods I had always loved it, the three syllables always flowed out of my mouth with such sweetness. I remember calling her name across the battlefield that night, it's beautiful essence tasting for once, bitter. I had screamed her name over and over, watching in disbelief as the dying Gaea used the last of her powers to swallow Annabeth up in the earth, the last thing to ever escape her perfect lips an earsplitting scream.
Just like that, she was gone. My life, my world, was gone. I felt tears pricking at my eyes, snapping me back to reality. I wiped my eyes and looked up at the sky seeing it had become dark, probably around midnight. I got up and slowly made my way back to the cabin, trying to be as quiet as I could so I wouldn't wake the other campers.
I opened the old wooden door to my cabin, closing it gently so it wouldn't creak. Making my way to my bed I stopped by the window, looking out at the lake where Annabeth and I had shared our first kiss. It felt so close to me and yet so far, something once so special to me now just a depressing reminder of what I'd lost.
Gods, everywhere I looked I saw her. This place was so full of memories, no matter where I went I couldn't get away from them. Every time I saw that painting of New Rome in the dining hall, I'm reminded of what could have been. We could have gone to college together, bought a house together, had kids, and maybe even lived to see them give us grandkids. We could have grown old together. No monsters or wars, just us together, always and forever.
I shook my head sadly and turned away from my window. She's gone now, and I couldn't do anything about it. I slumped over to my bed and shoved my head into the pillow, letting it soak up the tears rapidly forming in my eyes. I laid there, sobbing into my pillow until my throat became raw. Even then the tears kept flowing. I wondered if that was another power of Poseiden, limitless tears. I laughed sadly to myself, imagining the adorable face Annabeth would've made right then, the same face she always made when I said something stupid. I stayed stuck like that for a while, crying and reminiscing all the times we had. It's strange how with the right person 5 years can feel like a lifetime.
I was jolted from my thoughts by a sharp knock at the door. I looked up, noticing how bright rays of light were now streaming through my window. It was morning already? Shit, I must've cried for longer than I realized. I jumped when I heard another knock, followed by what sounded like Chiron's voice saying, "Percy, I'm sorry for bothering you but there is something important I need to tell you"
"Um.. just wait one second, okay!?" I shouted as I franticly wiped the tears from my eyes and tried my best to look like I hadn't been crying my eyes out for who knows how long.
"Percy, again I apologize, but this is rather important. It can't wait"
Now my curiosity was peaked. I walked to the door and nervously turned the knob to let the old centaur in.
"I'm sorry, uh what was it you needed to tell me?" Chiron sighed and shook his head before wheeling himself over to the nearest bed.
"You may want to sit down for this" I gulped and walked over to the bed, ducking my head to avoid the wooden beam and sitting on the bottom bunk.
"Are you comfortable?" Wow, he really seemed to be putting this off. It must be something really bad. I took a deep breath to steady my nerves and nodded, gesturing for him to continue.
"erm... alright. I guess we'll start at the beginning. In 983 AD, Hecate got bored of her regular duties. Only a few humans really understood what magic was, much less how to use it, so her job got extremely dull. Soon she got so bored that she decided to give humans a little push in order to bring to life the glory of true magic."
"Since when do regular humans have magic?"
"That's the thing, Percy, they don't. Hecate chose about 100 of the best sorcerers and sorceresses she could find for this little project of hers. She gave them a blessing that would allow them to do wonderful things, beautiful things. They could fly, shapeshift, heal wounds, even control water like you. However, there was a twist. In order to use these powers, they had to channel them through special wooden sticks called wands, and needed years and years of training before they could use them to their full extent. To make it easier for them Hecate even created Latin incantations, more commonly known as spells, to identify and pinpoint each effect of the wands."
"Wait... spells? Wands? Like witches and wizards?"
"Very much like that, yes". Now I was really confused, what was the point of this? "Anyways, seven years passed, and these witches and wizards as you correctly called them became fully trained. Hecate took aside 4 of her most promising students: Helga Hufflepuff, Salazar Slytherin, Godrick Gryffindor, and Rowena Ravenclaw. She told them that they needed to find and teach others what they knew, and educate the growing amount of children coming from the wizarding popularity. Once she left, the 4 thought about this before coming up with the idea of a school. Hecate had already sent them to London to avoid interference from the Olympians and shrouded them in the mist to keep mortals, or as wizards call them 'muggles', clueless. All they had to do was create a school large enough to accommodate everyone who would ever walk its halls, and that they did. It's a magnificent place called Hogwarts, set in a rural part of London only accessible by train. They decided to separate the students into four different houses based on the personality traits of each member. Those who are witty and clever like Rowena are sorted into Ravenclaw, those who are brave and loyal like Godrick are put into Gryfindor, those who are fair and hard-working like Helga are put into Hufflepuff, and those who are cunning and ambitious like Salazar are put into Slytherin."
"I'm sorry for interrupting Chiron, but I find it kinda weird you're talking about this like it's um- well you know, real?"
"That's because it is." If I had been drinking something I definitely would've choked on it right about then.
"I'M SORRY WHAT"
"Everything will make sense if you just let me explain, all right? Now, let's move on. Thousands of years later and that school was still going strong. However, someone dark had entered it. Someone everyone knew back then as Tom Riddle. He was a likable boy, good grades, plenty of friends, he even had a girlfriend. However, Tom wasn't satisfied with any of this, he wanted more. He wanted power, power over death, life, and so much more. He made his way through school with no trouble. Even his girlfriend, the person closest to him, never suspected a thing. Once he graduated from Hogwarts he started he became a sort of cult leader, using the stigma against any wizard that wasn't pure-blooded to gain followers. He called his followers death eaters and used them to inspire terror in the entire wizarding world. He killed many people and even started a war over this until one fateful evening when he killed the parents of a newborn child named Harry Potter. The love of Harry's mother protected him from death, turning the spell on Tom and killing him instead. Well, at least that's what everyone thought until he came back 6 years ago. He started hunting down Harry year after year until he finally gathered enough power to make a full comeback two years ago. Now he's planning a war against the wizarding world and Hecate has come to me for your help. She believes you can protect Harry Potter and in turn, the entire world of magic."
"Why me?"
"Well Percy, there's something that most people don't know about: Tom Riddle's girlfriend had a child. A daughter actually. She didn't have any powers so she was sent off to live in New York with her uncle, Richard." He looked at me as if waiting for a sign of recognition, but I still didn't see the point. "Percy, the girl's name is Sally Jackson"."I don't understand- that would mean I'm- WHAT?!"
Chiron sighed and looked down before looking back up to meet my eyes.
"You're a wizard Percy, and the grandson of Lord Voldemort."
