HOW THEY FIT WITH THE BOOK:

Chapter One: “Lonely Boy”
Relevant Lyrics; “I’m a lonely boy, oh, I’m a lonely boy/I’ve got a love that keeps me waiting.”
Why: They fit with the fact that Zayn is a very lonely boy, and he’s actually subconsciously waiting around for someone who cares about him to support him.

Chapter Two: “Smile”
Relevant Lyrics; “You came up to me and asked for my name, then every little thing with me had changed/I was wasting my time/you make me smile.”
Why: Liam, plain and simple, makes Zayn smile. Of course, like in every relationship, they’ve got their ups and their downs but in the end, it’s Liam who gets Zayn back on his feet.

Chapter Three: “Sun”
Relevant Lyrics: “Ocean blue, what have I done to you/cut so deep/what would you say/what would you do.”
Why: Zayn and Liam argue in this chapter, but it is quickly resolved because of how they balance each other out. Liam wonders what he could do, and what he has done, but he finds out and amends the situation.

Chapter Four: “I Wanna Get Better”
Relevant Lyrics: “I didn’t know I was lonely ‘till I saw your face/I didn’t know I was broken ‘till I wanted to change/I wanna get better.”
Why: Zayn realizes that his normal routines are actually flawed, and it takes him a while to get used to this, but once he does he agrees that he’s going to work on fixing them. This takes bravery, and Liam commends Zayn on it. Zayn didn’t know how lonely he really was until he met someone who wasn’t lonely, and he saw just how happy a person could be.

Chapter Five: “Walking Disasters”
Relevant Lyrics: “She used to get her kicks from a four to the floor/but now she’s always wasted/a total looker but she’s jaded/
the kind of shivering wreck that I adore/I can’t offer you a rescue/I will be your Freudian slip.”
Why: I personally think that the entirety of this song can be related to this story, but the most major parts are how Zayn used to be absolutely gorgeous, not saying that he isn’t now, but he’s “jaded’” or “wasted” – Liam is undoubtedly intrigued and does his best to help him.

Chapter Six: “Hold Me”
Relevant Lyrics: “When you hold me/hold me in your arms/I can feel your heart/we’re a long way from our home/why don’t you hold me.”
Why: Zayn and Liam are both far away from their respective homes and Zayn is delightfully responsive to the hug from Liam – he feels safer and for the most part, he feels loved. This can’t always help people, but luckily for Liam, Zayn is one of those people.

Chapter Seven: “Kiss Me”
Relevant Lyrics: “Cover me up/cuddle me in/heart against your chest/lips pressed to my neck/I’m in love now
Kiss me like you wanna be loved/this feels like falling in love.”
Why: In this chapter, both Zayn and Liam finally manage to use their time effectively. The line “kiss me like you wanna be loved” is important because, even though Zayn wouldn’t agree, that’s what he needs – love. He subconsciously wants to be loved.

Chapter Eight: “Techno Fan”
Relevant Lyrics: “East London’s not a bombsite/it is a treasure chest/
Shut up and move with me/or get out of my face/shut up and stay with me/or let go of my hand/I never knew I was a techno fan.”
Why: Put simply, Zayn doesn’t like the music at first, but Liam is insistent that they dance together. I think that dancing is a wonderful distraction from where Zayn’d mind wanders. He smiles, and he laughs and that’s all he needed to do; needed to get out of his comfort zone in order to be happy.

Chapter Nine: “Anti-D”
Relevant Lyrics: “Please allow me to be your anti-depressant/I too am prescribed as freely as any decongestants/
But still I’ve thrown away my citalopram/ I needed more than what was in those forty milligrams/so cast away with the doctor’s plans like me.”
Why: ((this is my favourite Wombats song, by the way.)) Zayn mentions in this chapter that “Liam was better than any anti-depressants he’s ever taken” and that’s really what Liam’s character is – Zayn’s medication to help him stop feeling sad. But, unlike anti-depressants, Liam doesn’t refuse Zayn’s ability to feel any emotions; just happy. Happy, excited, love.

Chapter Ten: “Smile”
Relevant Lyrics: “Come on and smile for me/don’t you shed a tear.”
Why: This is another pop-y, upbeat song to finish the book with. Liam doesn’t want Zayn to “shed a tear” he wants him to smile, albeit I can imagine once Zayn’s left he’ll have his depressive moods again but  there will definitely be fewer days like that –  which means Mission Accomplished for Liam.
