After winter will come the soft presence of spring.

Itachi hurried through the forest, leaping large distances from one branch to another in an unsteady manner.
The only thought in his head was getting to Shirona as soon as possible.
He had received her distress signal earlier in the day near Kiri. He had told Kisame to complete the mission on his own and wait for his return, not giving the blue male any time to reply or question where he was going. When the crow had sailed in the window leaving ribbons of blood droplets behind, he knew something was wrong. It was only confirmed after Itachi had noticed that a small red string was tied to it's leg.
He snapped out of his thoughts as the trees began to thin out, the branches becoming smaller and less dependable.
He hopped down to the rough earth, continuing his run without a single missed beat.
A house revealed itself in the middle of his vision, becoming clearer and more defined as he sprinted closer.
However, as the raven-haired male looked closer, he knew that he was too late.
Red painted everything, from the inside walls to nearby blades of grass. It dripped from the roof, spilling into dark puddles on the already stained floor. Large hunks were scattered throughout the nearby area, and he had a sneaking suspicion on what it was. Destruction was everywhere, leaving almost nothing untouched.
He landed on the yard, his feet making a squelch sound from the blood that filled the place.
Itachi began to walk around, the scent of iron filling the air. Bodies were scattered around, but to his relief, none that he recognized.
He approached the demolished door, looking past it to a living room stained in dark red, a sickeningly familiar body hunched on the floor.
The male hurried to her side, frantic as he searched for a pulse.
Nothing.
The child beside her was still as well, but he knew better. There was still a flicker of chakra inside the little girl, indicating life in all the destruction.
It was a miracle, and he wasn't about to throw it away.
His shaking hands picked the nearly dead child up, holding her close to his chest.
He was just about to take off when it hit him.
The girl couldn't make it to Konoha.
She would die before then, and that was what he was trying to avoid. None of the villages nearby were close enough to reach with the girl in a somewhat stable condition. Except for one, and that was the one village he wanted to avoid since the beginning.
He cursed, rushed thoughts running through his head as he took a swift leap in the direction of the nearest village with a working hospital.
Otogakure.
