Chapter 6: A New Normal

Over the course of the next few weeks you fell into an easy routine. You would eat with Newt, Minho and Chuck in the mornings. After breakfast you and Newt would limp over to the garden together where you worked all day with a short lunch break in the middle.

Your work consisted mostly of pulling weeds because you could do that on your hands and knees but slowly as time progressed you were learning to do the harder jobs. That was your idea, you didn't want people treating you differently because of your gender and an injury wasn't going to change that. Besides you were getting pretty good with your crutch and could do most everything the boys could.

After the work day was over you would eat dinner with Newt and whoever he brought over that day.

Afterwards you would usually need to wind down, you had a secret spot in the dead heads, there was a big tree and a small stream you would sit by and play guitar. You didn't play for anyone just yourself. You could only remember the beginnings of songs as far as lyrics went but your muscle memory let you play through the melodys. It helped to calm you down.

You got to know all of the gladers over meals and you quickly became part of the family. Many of them apologized to you for not doing anything that first night with Galley, they had never had that problem before and no one knew how to handle it.

You told everyone it was fine, that you were over it, but you couldn't get the look he had given you out of your head, when he had told you you would regret it. You didn't trust that you were safe and went out of your way to never be alone with him anywhere in sight.

No one knew this of course. It was your problem and you didn't want Newt or any of the others fighting your battles for you. If anyone ever brought it up you would smile, brush it off and change the subject and after a while everyone seemed to have moved on or forgotten. You were smiling after all, what could be wrong?
