They never even would have figured out what was happening with Fred if it weren't for Hermione's genius, but working out how to stop it was really the most difficult bit. Hermione and George had been scanning her bloody "Darkest Witches and Wizards of the Ages," book for hours trying to find an answer, and Harry had long since left to return to his own duties.
"Ms. Granger, there really are lines of people waiting for their appointments outside," Norman the Magical Machine said for about the fifth time.
"Busy!" Hermione yelled, again, for the fifth time.
"Hermione, I know you're busy and we aren't getting anywhere. Honestly, we could try to work this out later-"
"George, I don't think you understand how pressing this matter is. The world could end!" she said, cutting him off.
"No, I do understand," he reasoned, "but I think we're wasting our time at this point. We've scanned every line in this book hundreds of times and we're not finding anything. If only we could contact someone from the other side of The Veil. They might know something more about what's going on and what to do about it."
Hermione furrowed her brow and considered this for a second. "I think I know of a rumored spell. A summoning spell of sorts. It allows you to talk with a loved one from the other side, but only for a short period of time. It is dangerous though, you could end up bringing something through that you don't want. It might be safer to just try to find someone who has already passed through the hole in The Veil and become fully human again," she said. George weighed their options.
"No, that won't work. Like you stressed before, time is of the essence, and by the time we find a fully formed spirit willing to talk to us, Voldemort himself might be back and at full power," he said, "Give me the spell."
After finding the spell and carefully handing it to George, Hermione said, "It will be safer for you if you try to summon someone that you know well, a loved one."
"Fred," said George, the tears burning behind his eyes threatening to spill out.
"Right," she said before hugging George. "Don't lose it." George took out his camera phone and snapped a photo of the ancient scroll. He had seen too many films where something important like this was lost, and he wasn't taking any chances. It was probably a good idea since the scroll was so old that it felt as if it would crumble in George's grasp.
