the school had started just like any other day but today was very different every one was very quite when we walked into class that day there was an union soldier there talking to Mr. Tunstall Tom asked Richard what was going on Richard tells that the civil war has broke out and it has now came to Lincoln County New Mexico well Dirty Steve and Dave had already made up their minds that they were going to fight for the south and for the confederacy the rest Mr. Tunstall's class had got together to talk about our choices that we had to make if we were going to fight for the north or the south I didn't know what to decide on but the one thing that I did know was that all of us boys in Mr. Tunstall's class was very close friends and none of us knows what would happen or even if we would still be close friends none of us knew but only God would know what would happen. Tom said that he was going to fight for the north and Doc and Richard and Charley said they was going to fight for the north even my adopted father Chavez that he was going to fight for north this came after our dog Nina had died and we had got our Alaskan Malamute puppy named Avalanche I was the lone hold out then I had made up my mind I was going to fight for the north I told my adopted mother Hannah about what I was going to do and she would have none of it saying that son was going to stay out of the war it was bad enough that her husband was going off to fight her son wasn't. but later that night I had slipped off from home and joined up with my father's unit but I didn't tell him that I had slipped off from home to join his unit. my next chapter will be about the battle of the civil war.
