Today was the day, Dad had made up that silly lie to Mum and she totally bought it. Now we were on our way to Diagon Alley with Sharna and her parents. We were all dressed in cloaks. I was wearing a silver and green coloured one. I wanted to be a much a Slytherin as I could, even before school started.
We all split up and me and my Dad set off to Ollivanders, a wand was the first thing I wanted to get.
“Welcome!” He said to my father and me. He shook both our hands.
“Hello!” I practically shouted at him, I was so darn excited. He gave me an are-you-alright look and smiled.
Ollivander walked off into un-neat stacks and rows of hundreds of wands to find one he thought would suit me. He pulled out about two.
“You’ll know which one is right for you, you will sense it.” He winked; I nervously looked at them and pulled out the first one… Hmm, No… This one gave me really bad vibes. I instantly put it back.
“No?” He said and took it back and put it away. I pulled out the second wand and instantly warmth flooded through me. I smiled and looked at my Dad who was smiling too.
“Ah… Very nice, Sycamore with dragon core, 12.5 inches. Very adventurous I see.” He explained the wand to me, I grinned.
“That sounds awesome! Yeah, I like climbing stuff…” I exclaimed.
“Well, Miss Everleigh… The wand chooses the wizard.” Like that line wasn’t obvious enough…
Dad gave him the money and then we left. As soon as I walked out of the shop I noticed a rather pale looking boy with grey eyes. He was with an odd looking man who had a lot of the same features, had to be his father. The man didn’t look very friendly, and the boy looked quite proud of himself as he strutted down the road. What a tart.
“Can we go buy my clothes, Dad? PLEASE?” I wailed. He hated it when I wailed and with that I’d get whatever I wanted. Childish? Yes, but did it work? Definitely! I dragged him over to Madame Malkin’s.
We bought my robes, some scarves and cloaks. I had to be fitted which was a little bit annoying. and every time I came out to show Dad what I looked like in my robes or cloaks I got forced to try on, he’d clap which embarrassed me terribly because every time he did, everyone in the store would stare over at us.
“Nice going, Dad.” I muttered. He still wouldn’t stop… But that’s parents are there for, to embarrass you.
I met Sharna and her parents over at Flourish and Blotts, she was buying her books.
“Hey, what sort of wand did you get, Sharna?” I asked excitedly.
“I got Larch with dragon core, 10 and a quarter inches,” She said proudly, her blue eyes glistening, “you?”
“I got Sycamore with dragon core, 12.5 inches.” I beamed.
“Cool! We both have Dragon core!!” She squealed.
We walked over and looked at some of the books.
“I can’t wait to learn about Transfiguration and the Dark Arts. I was talking to a boy who is a first year like us. He was telling me about some of the teachers there… He said that I’m not going to like the potions class. He has 3 older brothers at Hogwarts already!” She exclaimed.
I laughed at her and I felt someone jabbing their finger on my shoulder, ouch it hurts! I turned around to see that silly looking boy with the grey eyes. He had quite a smug look on his face.
“I like your cloak… It’s very fascinating. I know I’m already going to be in Slytherin! My father was in Slytherin too!” He said proudly, sticking his nose up. I laughed at him, was this boy for real? Sharna gave him a what the hell look.
“What’s so funny?” He asked, now he had a sly mischievous look on his face. I stopped laughing automatically.
“Sorry... Umm... Thanks, I want to be in Slytherin too.” I said a little embarrassed, he caught me laughing at him.
“Are you a pure blood?” He asked me in a drawling tone. I frowned at him, was he one of those wizards who cared about blood status?
“No… I’m a half blood. My Mum is a muggle.” I said, he gave me an annoyed look.
“Shame… I doubt you’ll make it into Slytherin.” He said and walked away.
“Who was that!?” Sharna asked me.
“I have no idea…” I sighed; I didn’t even get to know his name.
“Well he is an utter moron if you ask me!” She replied stiffly and went back to her parents who were buying all her books.
I bought the rest of my things and didn’t even see that mysterious boy again, not that I wanted to anyway, he was a rude git. At least one thing made my day; Dad bought me a fluffy grey ashy coloured cat with the most beautiful green eyes from Eeylops Owl Emporium. I couldn’t wait to start at Hogwarts.
As soon as we got home, Mum already had the table set with my favourite meal, pasta. I grinned and ran to the table as fast as I could.
“Did you two have fun today?” She said happily as she served up our dinner.
“We very well did, didn’t we, Sarah?” Dad winked at me. I laughed and chewed on a piece of chicken.
“Yeah… It was brilliant, Mum! We had so much fun.” I said and shoved my fork down hard on the table, oops.
“Sarah!” Both my parents said in unison. I sank into my chair with embarrassment.
We silently ate our meal after that until Mum spoke up.
“So… Why did you buy a cat, Sarah?” She inquired. Mum was very confused to why I would have bought a cat to go to a boarding school, I looked down. “Erm… Because… Egh…” I didn’t know what to say.
“Because the school allows girls to bring cats with them and Sarah really wanted a cat!” Dad piped up. Mum gave the two of us suspicious looks and twirled the pasta around her fork, continuing to eye me.
“Hmm… What did you name the cat?”
“Mystique!” I grinned at the two of my parents. They both smiled at me. But I couldn’t get the feeling out of my head that Mum was onto us… She started staring at Dad now.
“What’s wrong, Soph?” He asked Mum. He gave her that funny nickname… Soph. Her real name is Sophie, never thought it suited her. She smiled nervously and mouthed ‘Nothing’ and continued to eat.
It was already 10 o’clock and I couldn’t get to sleep… One more day and I would be on the train to Hogwarts! I kept tossing and turning in my bed, too excited. I leaned up to pat Mystique, who was sleeping at the foot of my bed. One more day…. Just one more!
