【 (y/n)'s POV】
I was torn out of the comfort of my dream as light shined onto my eyes. I sat up on the bed, rubbing my eyes before I finally opened them. Another day in this hell everyone calls an orphanage. Yes, I'm an orphan. When I was three years old I was left here. I don't know why I was, I don't know who my parents were. All I know is that I was abandoned at this hellhole 8 years ago.
With a sigh, I got up from the bed, knowing that if I miss breakfast I won't be able to eat for a good 5-6 hours until 8:00pm at dinner. They've never told us that, but I ended up learning that the hard way.
I took a shirt from my the tote box they provide for our clothes instead of a dresser or a closet, putting it on and tossing the tank top I was wearing before that onto the bed. I slipped down my pajama shorts, grabbing the jeans I was wearing yesterday and slipping them on, barely able to button the button since I grew out of them awhile ago. Clothes shopping wasn't common, we only got clothes when we couldn't fit into our old clothes even slightly.
I made my way out of my bedroom and down the long hall of rooms. There was two hallways dedicated to rooms to each gender. Two girls halls, two boys halls. I was on the (gender)'s second hallway.
A usually 7 minute walk took about 4 minutes since I ran, soon I bursted through the doors into the breakfast room, just in time too. They were just starting to serve food. I slipped onto the bench between my two friends, who scooted apart as soon as one spotted me so I could get onto the bench.
"Did Ms. Robinson say anything important?" I asked, still trying to catch my breath after all of the running.
"There's someone coming to adopt today," The friend to my left, Keisha, was first to answer.
The one to my right, Jacob, nodded in agreement to her answer, "yeah, Layla's been bragging all morning about how she was going to be the one getting adopted."
I couldn't help it but to scoff and roll my eyes. It was no secret I didn't like Layla, all three of us didn't. She was a bully, if you weren't like her and her friends you were scum. She gained that reputation after the first few months she was here. Speak of the devil, I could see Layla heading our way. Her flats obnoxiously slamming against the ground like she always made it, presumably because she though it made her more intimidating.
"Why did you dorks say my name?" She asked in her annoyingly high pitched voice, her hands going to her hips.
I rolled my eyes, "We are talking about how someone is coming to adopt today."
"You turds think you actually think you're going to be adopted? Ha!" Layla said, the ha so dramatic it made me cringe, an almost wicked smirk on her lips.
"Anyone can be adopted, Layla," I pointed out, a deep frown on my face.
"Oh yeah? Then why haven't you been adopted in the past, what? 8 or 9 years?" Layla challenged, her smirk getting darker.
I tried not to show any signs of it, but that hurt. It was a subject I'm sensitive about, of course she used it.
"Just, go away Layla," Keisha told her, seeing the small signs that I was upset.
"Yeah! Leave (y/n) alone!" Jacob did his usual jumping in.
Layla just scoffed and rolled her eyes, turning on the not even half an inch big heel on her flats and walked off, which I was thankful to see, I didn't want to deal with her.
I gave Keisha and Jacob a small, happy to have them standing up for me. They always had everyone's back, the only two people in this place who were actually nice and not jerks. That's why I was friends with them, ever since they showed up I've been super good friends with them.
I didn't have much time of thinking, as a plate was slammed down in front of me, a bit of the food landing on the barely washed table around my plate. I muttered a small, "Thanks," wanting to be polite, before looking at the plate of food. Their food was actually pretty good surprisingly, I have to admit I actually enjoy it.
I took a piece of bacon, taking a bit of it. It was pretty good, it was a bit crispy but not to point that it ruined the taste. The lady who kept an eye over us, Ms. Robinson, announced to eat quickly or else we'll have to go hungry, so I stuffed my face until my plate was mostly empty. Only thing left on the plate was (l/f/b) [least favorite breakfast], since I didn't like it. I got up with my plate and walked to one of the trash cans, dropping it inside and returning to her friends.
A few minutes later they were all told to go to the main room, the room that we were all usually in. I found myself thinking about the person, or people, who would be coming. What would they be like? Who would they adopt? I didn't have much confidence that it would be me, but maybe it would be Keisha and Jacob. They deserved to have a loving family.
The three of us had been sitting at one of the tables, sketching and talking, when the sound of the giant doors of the orphanage opening caught my attention, four shadows just seen as the people made there way down the hallway to the room.
