Tonight was party night. Well, nearly every night was party night on the Cut. All the fish they had caught needed preparing.

That was Amelia's job. She set up candles around her cabin the Mauve bought her.

This cabin was on the border of the Cut. It allowed her to stay with her friends but not too far in dangers way.

The rest of the crew walked in expecting a to be hit with a horrible smell. But it smelt like lavender and tuna. Not the best combo, but it still smelt better.

She had almost finished preparing the fish. She had divided it into portions. "That's for your dad Kie." She handed her a smelly bag.

"Your dad Pope." She did the same.

"And for you John B."

"And for us JJ." JJ jumped between his house with his abusive father, John B's shack and Amelia's cabin.

"Thanks, Amelia." They all said in unison.

"We'll meet back at John B's right?" Kie confirmed.

"Yes, ma'am." Pope, Kie and John B left the cabin leaving JJ and Amelia on their own.

"Shall we deep fry it?" She asked.

"Yeah, why not?" He shrugged. He went to the speaker that she owned and turned on some slow bachata music.

She smiled as she pulled JJ in. "I'm gonna teach you how to dance." She grinned at him.

"You are?"

"I am." She said as she stood him up straight. "You need to get close," Amelia commanded, pulling his waist close. Their pelvises touching. Amelia noticed how red JJ face went. She smiled to herself.

"What now?"

"You let loose and vibe to the music." She said as she moved her hips. JJ began to catch on slowly. He treaded in her toes making her stop sharply. "Ow!"

"Sorry. Are you okay?" He looked down at her feet and back at her.

"It's all good!" She chirped, ignoring the pain.

"I hate when you do that," JJ said as he got a beer out of the fridge.

"Do what?" She furrowed her brows as she placed a fish into eggs.

"Pretend when your shits okay when it's not."

"I don't get what you mean." She didn't look at him. JJ rolled his eyes as he walked over to her. She then walked away to get flour.

"If we're really friends, you would let me be there for you. Or maybe you're just a liar, hanging out with us to get a kick. Is that right kook?" He said following her around.

"If that's what you think, maybe you don't know me at all."

"You never tell us how you're feeling. Or what's up with you!"

"There's nothing up with me because I'm great all the time." She lies as she began to deep fry the fish.

"Just stop!" He said as he grabbed her wrist, making her look at him. "Just tell me what you're feeling." He whispered.

"My dad's back." Tears were held up in her eyes.

"What?" He whispered.

"He came back last month." She sniffled.

"That's why you've stayed here."

"But I have to go back tomorrow night because of the storm."

"I'll come with you." He said.

"No, no JJ, you need to stay here and be safe."

"Do you know how much it's going to hurt me if you're not safe?"

"Do you know how much it's gonna hurt me?" She repeated his question. "If you turn around one day and not be there." She looked at him in the eyes seeing that he was on the brim of tears. "I would literally die JJ. Every time you go back home I don't know what to do with myself. Whether you come back with a black eye or two broken ribs."

"And if he hits you again?" He looked at her letting go of her wrists. "You almost died, Amelia. I almost lost you. The Pogues almost lost you. John B cried every night, waiting for a phone call, waiting for you to ask if he was home okay. Pope brought you fruit salad everyday, speaking his random stuff about school stuff. Kie drew on your arm every day, letting you know you were a survivor. Even Sarah Cameron stayed overnight with me."

"You were there?" She asked him.

"Every night. The Pogues can't go through that again. Not knowing if you're going to die or not." JJ wiped her tears. "If he lays a hand on you, Amelia, I want to be there before it even happens."

Amelia moves her head closer to JJ's. He sits frozen, from both fear and excitement. She leans in, so her foreheads rest against his. They close their eyes. Both their breaths are shaking. "Thank you," she says in barely more than a whisper.

"For what?" He replies, his voice mimicking her pitch.

"For caring too much." Her voice wavers, exhilarated from the tension between them.

Amelia gently leans in and kisses JJ's cold lips. They pull apart and take shaky, shallow breaths.

Unable to contain themselves anymore, JJ holds Amelia's head in his hands and pulls her into a fiery and passionate kiss. Her hands work their way around his body, feeling each crevasse, each line along with his perfect physique.

JJ pushes her against the wall, gently. His hands venture over her curved body, exploring. They pull apart and open their eyes. They stare at each other, deep into each other's eyes.

Both their eyes full of wonder and love, curiosity and passion. No words are spoken but a story worthy of them is communicated.

JJ leans in a softly kisses up and down Amelia's neck. She lets out little whimpers of anticipation. He works his way back to her tender, smooth lips. As they kiss JJ's hands lead to below her bum, indicating for her to jump. She followed his lead and climbed his strong, muscular body. She runs her lips up to his neck and lands a loving and intense kiss on his lips.

The look of realisation struck her face. She froze and in a few seconds she jumped down from him. "Wh-what is it?"

"We can't do that!" She pursed her lips as she walked away from him. She quickly faced him again.

"Wha-why not?" He asked, the heartbreak evident in his face and voice.

"Because you don't like me like that."

"Are you kidding me?!" He exclaimed as he walked towards her. "I've been waiting for seven years for that!" He leaned in to kiss her again which she accepted but then pulled away again.

"What about the Pogues. The rules state no Pogue on Pogue macking."

"Then we keep it a secret." He smiled as he leaned his forehead against hers.

"But-"

"Stop worrying and let me savour and enjoy this moment." She laughed as he took in a deep breath. The calm stillness of the room was broken when the fire alarm blared out.

"The fish!" She exclaimed breaking from his grip. The charcoal-black fish was sitting on the pan. She pouted as she threw the fish out of the window.
