They said it would take over six weeks to heal. They were aiming for two months. She couldn't sit around for two months, she wanted out. A week in, a man came to visit. A man Sayid recognized immediately. It was the man who'd stopped him from crossing the street.
The man: "Hi. I'm... I'm sorry, I just felt like I should come and apologize."
Sayid: "Apologize for what?"
The man: "It was my fault she was walking backwards, because I stopped you."
Sayid stood and moved to the man, "This was not your fault, sir."
The man: "I haven't introduced myself. I'm Jacob."
Sayid: "Jacob, I am Sayid. And there's no need to apologize, I assure you."
Sayid shook the mans hand.
Sayid: "Though we appreciate it."
Her: "It's fine. If anything, you saved him. That car would've hit someone eventually."
Jacob put a hand on her forearm, "I'm sorry it had to be you."
She smiled softly.
Jacob: "I'll be on my way then. Get well soon."
Jacob leaves, the door closing behind him.
Her: "He's right."
Sayid looks to her in question.
Her: "I shouldn't have been walking backwards. I shouldn't have even crossed the street, if I had just waited for you I wouldn't have killed it."
Sayid: "Stop-"
Her, crying: "No, this is my fault-"
Sayid brushed his thumb over her tear, "Stop. This is not your fault. It was a hit and run driver, you couldn't have avoided him."
Her: "But I could've. If I'd just looked for a second-"
"He was going 120 miles an hour you wouldn't have had time to move."
"But I could've."
"No you couldn't. This is not your fault, I don't ever want you to think that."
But she did think that. She would think that for the rest of her life.
The doctors were amazed. Ever since the end of the first week she'd been recovering rapidly. They were aiming for just a month now, faster than bones could heal. She had just five more days to go. She felt fine, for the most part. Sayid had stayed with her until she begged him to get some fresh, not-hospital air. He wouldn't leave for long, though. He'd sleep there, in the chairs, on the floor, leaning against her bed. He tried to sleep in it once, falling out. She remembered that night.
She'd woken to a grunt and a loud thud. Sayid was on the floor.
Her, leaning over and laughing lightly: "Are you okay?"
Sayid groaned, "Perfect."
Her, jokingly: "Oh, wow, you fell off a bed. I got hit by a car."
Sayid laughed and stood, leaning over her and kissing her.
Sayid, his mouth over her cheek: "I'm well aware."
He kissed her cheek.
Her: "I can scoot over."
Sayid: "So you can end up on the floor? Sounds perfect. I'll sleep in the chair, it's fine."
Her: "You could go home, you know."
Sayid looked at her without speaking for a moment, "I'd rather not."
She wondered if it was because of what home would remind them of. That they could've been sharing their home with their child. The child she'd gotten killed. The child she had nightmares about almost every night. She wondered if they'd ever stop, but doubted it.
It was the last day in the hospital and Sayid was out for coffee. The door opened and suddenly Ben Linus was in the room.
Her: "What..."
Ben: "I came to see how you were doing."
Her: "How are you even here?"
Ben: "I left the island when it moved."
"No one's seen you."
"Well, I'm not generally someone wanting to be seen."
She looked at him, cautious.
Ben: "I hear you're healing miraculously."
Her: "Who's Jacob?"
Ben looked to her in surprise, "Jacob is... well, I don't really know, he's... the islands protector."
"And can he leave it?"
"I suppose it's possible, yes."
"But you don't know what he looks like?"
Ben tilts his head, staring.
Her: "Ben."
Ben: "No, I... I don't. Did you see him?"
Her: "Well, I wouldn't know because you don't even know what he looks like."
Ben: "What did he look like?"
"I don't know, blue eyes, blonde hair, six foot something."
Ben, to himself: "Why would he..."
"Ever since he came here I've been healing like crazy, no one knows why but he's the only thing that happened differently."
Ben stared off, thinking.
Her: "Why are you here, Ben?"
Ben: "To check on you."
Her: "Why? Why would you possibly care?"
Ben: "I've been trying to keep all of you safe since I left. Clearly I haven't been doing it well enough."
Sayid enters the room eying Ben, coffee in both hands. He sets them down.
Sayid, accusing: "What are you doing here?"
Ben: "I was here to check on your wife, Sayid. Because she got hit by a car because I couldn't do my job well enough. Since I'm clearly not wanted, I'll be on my way."
Ben starts to leave, but is blocked by Sayid.
Sayid: "What do you care?"
Ben: "I am trying to keep you all safe, Sayid. Everyone - all of your friends."
Her: "Sayid."
Sayid looked to her, then moved to let Ben leave.
