The next morning, Spencer wakes up to the smell of smoke. He furrows his eyebrows, sitting up in bed. He hears Tessa and Silas barking downstairs. He looks over at Sam, who has the same expression on his face. The two men get up and exit the room to see Steve and Bucky doing the same. The smell of smoke gets stronger the closer they get to the stairs. Spencer goes down first and his eyes widen at the orange flames spreading around his living room. He opens the living room door, only to feel the extreme heat of the burning flames. His heart races at the sight of Silas protecting his sister in the corner of the room. "Guys, get out of the house!" He yells at his guests. "Are you crazy? We aren't going anywhere without you" Sam replies. "Just go!" He shouts. He huffs when none of them move. Spencer kneels on the floor, his attention going back to the dogs. Luckily, Silas was able to keep him and Tessa away from the flames. But the only way to get them out is if they crawl towards him. "Silas, lie down boy. Come on, get on the floor" He coaxes him, but the dog doesn't move, not wanting to leave his sister. He sighs, pausing to think for a moment "Silas, collar". He points to the collar around Tessa's neck. The male dog almost immediately seems to know what to do. Gently, he grabs the flap on her collar with his teeth. "Okay, good boy. Now come to me" Spencer encourages. Silas slowly starts to lie down, but stops upon hearing the floor boards creak beneath him. "Silas, it's okay. Slow and steady, we gotta get your sister out" He tells the dog.
With a new found determination, Silas lowers himself into a crawling position, effectively pulling Tessa with him. With a little more encouragement from the four men, Silas starts to crawl towards Spencer "That's it, good boy. Slowly now, take your time". He does his best to avoid the flames as he pulls his sister along with him. Tessa whimpers, clearly more frightened than her brother is. The flames don't seem to be dying down any time soon, but Silas doesn't back down. He always was a brave dog, and right now he is showing just how brave he is, and was as a working military dog. He doesn't always show it, but he knows when it's time to be serious. It's like a switch. "Good boy, Silas. Come on, not much further now" His owner says. The other three men watch as the tension rises. Sam already knew what these two dogs were made of, but Steve and Bucky are amazed at how calm Silas is. The flames are spreading faster than a wildfire, but Silas is handling the situation better than most people could. As well as keeping his sister safe too. Eventually, the two dogs get to Spencer. His eyes are stinging from the smoke, but he reaches out to grab Silas first. He pushes him behind him and Sam takes him outside. Steve and Bucky following after. Then he grabs Tessa and picks her up. He carries her outside as she whimpers. "Shh, it's okay. Tess, you're alright" He whispers as he feels her shaking like a leaf in his arms. Someone must have called the police and the fire department, because they arrive no more than five minutes later. Sam talks to a police officer as the firefighters start putting the flames out as best they can.
Spencer coughs from the smoke caught in his lungs, his throat is dried up and his eyes are watery. Silas and Tessa are taken to the back of the fire engine for a check up. Someone approaches him with a shock blanket, but he waves the person away "No, I'm fine". He sighs, watching the flames be put out by the water hoses. When it's safe enough, two firefighters go in to check the damage. After talking to a police officer, Sam approaches his friend. He pats his shoulder "You know this wasn't accidental, right?". Spencer nods "I'm guessing I'm coming with you now". He returns his nod "I'm not sure where we'll go, but yeah". The two men both turn around when they hear the dogs barking softly. They are wrapped in shock blankets and look a lot cleaner. Sitting on the back of the fire truck, Silas is quite happy to sit with his tongue hanging out while Tessa lies down at her brother's paws. Sam smiles "And those two are coming with us". Spencer shrugs "Wouldn't have it any other way".
That's when Steve and Bucky appear beside them. "I'm sorry for this, Spencer". He shrugs "I'll be fine". Cap sighs "I called Stark. He's sending a jet to pick us up, our only option is to return to the facility. But we won't stay there for long, we just need to figure out where we can go". Sam nods "Alright". Then a firefighter approaches the four men "Who is the owner of this house?". Spencer raises his hand "That would be me". The man turns to him "So, there hasn't been much damage done upstairs, but the house probably won't be stable to live in for at least two months. Do you have somewhere to stay?". "Yeah, he's staying with me" Sam lies. The firefighter seems satisfied with that answer "Okay". He walks off and Spencer turns to the three men "So, when are we leaving?". "As soon as we can" Steve answers.
_______Spencer heads over to the fire engine, where Tessa and Silas are waiting. He sighs, sitting on the metal floor beside the dogs "Hey, guys". He rests his hand on Tessa's fur. "So, I guess we won't be back here for a while. You two ready for that? I'm not. Well, not really. I suppose I always thought we would move at some point, but I never expected it to be this soon. When do I ever get what I want, though?" He sighs. After a few minutes, Sam approaches him and leans against the side of the fire engine, crossing his arms over his chest "Hey, that's us ready to go. Stark's got a jet waiting. You good?". Spencer shrugs "As I'll ever be, I guess". "Hey, you okay?" Sam asks, concern lacing his voice for his friend. He stands up, shaking his head "Yeah, I'm good". Sam stands in front of him, putting his hand on his shoulder, stopping him from going anywhere. "What's up, Spence?" He questions. Spencer sighs "The avenging life. If I go with you guys, I'm almost certain I'll become an Avenger by the end of it. I don't think I'm ready for that. Avenging is your world, your world is crazy". Sam smiles "You know, that's almost exactly what I said to Steve before I became an Avenger". "I'm not you, Wilson" He sighs. Sam nods "You're right, you're not. But let me tell you something, you aren't yourself either. Trust me, you're a brother. I know you haven't been yourself since Connor died. And I've only known you since then. Maybe this is a chance for you to get back to normal-ish. Avenging helped me out, not saying that it'll help you too, but it's worth a try. No one's forcing you to become an Avenger, and if you are offered it, you don't have to take it".
________Hey guys, sorry this is very late but better late than never, right? Also, does anyone else kinda ship Spencer and Sam? It won't happen, but I do ship them a little.
