The rain was sending shivers through my body. I could only feel the warmth of my burning legs as I ran. A 9 year old girl, in the middle of the night, running down the street to seek solace in her best friend's arms.

"Hey? Are you done spacing out? Or do you need a couple more minutes."

I was brought out of my thoughts by Jamie's voice.

"Well, now I am. You disturbed them," I said.

"And here I am thinking you'd be nice to me. Cheer up, Buttercup. It's your senior year. Soon, you'll be shopping for prom dresses with Rose, but please don't wear something tight with a low cleavage. I won't be around to beat up any guys for staring at you for too long and while we're on the topic of guys, whomever thinks he is good enough to accompany you, will undergo third degree with me first," Jamie said.

"Excuse me," I said with a sour expression on my face. "A woman should wear whatever she feels comfortable and beautiful in. It's not anybody else's business. The male species should learn to respect. And you don't have to worry about any guys. Half of them are preppish imbeciles and the other half only know how to pump weights. Plus, I'm not the most popular person, you know."

Jamie laughed. "I'm all about women empowerment but sometimes I want to tuck you away from all the nasty in the world and keep you safe. Who cares about popularity? You're a beautiful and pure person."

There was a moment of silence

"Anyway, goodluck with your first day. Call me when it's over. Okay, love you. Bye."

I didn't even get a last word in before Jamie hung up the phone. I could tell he was slightly shy about what he last said. Jamie and I have been inseparable since the day I was born. His Dad and mine went to the same college, graduated together and even bought homes on the same street.

Every scraped knee or a boy pulling my pigtails, Jamie was there, taking care of me. Him being 2 years older than me, I always dreaded the thought that he saw me in diapers.

"Layton, Rose is here. Come down princess," I heard my father's voice echo all around.

I ran downstairs and quickly embraced Rose.

She let go of me and began dancing and shouting, "Seniors! Seniors! Seniors!" along with fist pumps in the air

"Gosh! My daughter is a high school senior, yet I don't have any grey hairs to prove it. I guess I am really winning at life."

Cassidy closed the fridge door while holding an apple.

"I don't know how you do it Mr. C. I'm 17 and I have grey hairs along with a crackling back. I blame those two over there."

"As much as I want to hear how my daughter and Rose contributed to your back problems, not, it's time for you kids to get going."

"Uncle Rom, it's not like how it sounded. I swear all I was talking about was piggy back rides."

Everyone laughed and made their way through the front door.

"I love you, princess, and I'm so proud of you," he placed a kiss on my cheek. "Go out there and change the world. Joyce will be home when you get back."

Joyce had been my caregiver ever since I was 10 years old. She had become a mother to me and honestly, I wouldn't trade her for anything in the world. She and my father nurtured me into the woman I am today. You're probably wondering where my real mother is. Well, we need to build up some suspense.

As for Rose and Cassidy, I met them during my first recess in the 1st grade. Jamie had gone to the bathroom so I had decided to explore the grounds a little. Rose waved me over, and as they say, the rest is history.

The three of us became inseparable, and during our junior year, Cassidy confessed his feelings towards Rose. Honestly, they're a great couple. Rose is headstrong with a huge heart and would definitely deck anyone who tries to hurt the people she cares about and as for Cassidy, he was always the level headed one that always made sure there was a smile on his two favorite girls' faces.

"It's our last first day here so let's make it a good one, shall we?" said Rose as the car pulled up in front of Lightwood Heights.

As we exited the car, she locked arms with Cassidy and I. " I'm so glad to have you two by my side," she said.

We all embraced in a group hug and made our way down the halls.

During the first period:

"Attention, class! We have a new transfer from South Heights," said our English teacher, Mr. Hayes.

Everyone gasped as an attractive young man entered the room. His most noticeable features were his slicked back thick black hair and beard scruff along with his leather jacket. Everything about him screamed bad boyish and being from South Heights, one of the more run down areas in our district, just meant these preppy idiots weren't going to take him lightly.

Rose nudged me with her eyebrows raised and a smirk intact on her face. I rolled my eyes and continued reading my book.

People began to whisper.

"You don't belong here boy."

"Who transfers in their senior year?"

"Someone's on the wrong side of the tracks."

The handsome stranger took the available seat in front of Rose and I was not even giving anybody the satisfaction of his reaction. As he sat I got a whiff of his cologne and all I could describe it as, was desire.

"Well, class, that's Kiandre Jacobson. Now get back to work," yelled Mr. Hayes.

Kiandre Jacobson, huh? I pondered to myself before I was brought back to earth by Rose saying something.

"Things just got a whole lot more interesting."
