CHAPTER FIVE: profile.
***
CARINA MAYE DIDN'T get more than an hour of sleep that night. She tossed and turned, not being able to keep her mind off of her daughter. There was a glimmer of hope that Desdemona was alive out there, which she chose to focus on for most of the day. However, the second she got alone, her anxiety took over.
It was nearly 5 the next morning. Desdemona had been missing for 28 hours. If the kidnapper stuck to pattern, then they had 68 hours left to find her before her body was left in the park.
Carina kept her focus on the framed picture of her daughter as the sunlight started to shine through the windows. She heard cars start to pull up outside, meaning crews were already starting to arrive at her house. She sighed.
A little while later, there was a soft knock on the door. Confused, Carina peaked out the window above the couch. She looked around the front yard until her eyes landed on the man standing at the door. She smiled slightly and stood up to open it.
"Well, good morning, Dr. Reid," she whispered, careful not to wake Mrs. Chapman.
"Morning, Carina. I was nervous you wouldn't be awake," he replied, trying his best to hide a grin.
"I couldn't sleep last night, so here I am."
"I'm sorry. I brought you some coffee, but I wasn't sure how you take it," Spencer said, handing her a cup.
"Oh, I love it black. Thank you so much. This is really sweet."
Spencer's smile started to show as she stepped out of the house and onto the porch, carefully closing the door.
"I just wanted to check on you and make sure you're doing alright."
Carina shrugged, "I'm trying my best to stay positive. I trust you, Dr. Reid. I trust that you'll bring Mona home."
"We're all working very hard. We're delivering the profile today. Hopefully, it'll help narrow down the suspect pool and give us some leads," he explained.
"I think it's really cool what you do. It's pretty unique," she said, taking a sip of coffee.
"Profiling is definitely unique. I won't get too into it now, so I'll save the specifics for a later conversation."
"I'd love to hear all about it."
Spencer was full-on beaming by now. He was so relieved that he was able to gain Carina's trust. Hopefully, it would help the investigation move along quickly.
"Well, I won't hold you, Doctor. I really appreciate you stopping by and bringing the coffee."
"It's no problem. Can I come by later and check on you again?"
"I'd like that."
"Sounds good. Bye, Cari."
"See you later, Dr. Reid."
