prompt(s): first date; after-school

universe: human!au/everyone lives, no one dies

summary: Kou has to stay after school because Teru has student council work, but it's raining and they only brought one umbrella. Mitsuba keeps him company, because his cute face can't get ruined by the rain (read: he was stupid enough to not bring an umbrella).

Kou sighed in boredom, kicking his feet back and forth. He was currently seated on a bench outside the school, waiting for his elder brother to be done with his work. They had only brought one umbrella to school that day, and while Kou could easily just take it and go home, he felt bad about leaving his brother to soak in the rain. Thus, he waited.

The downpour showed no signs of stopping, and Kou's boredom just grew more and more. Maybe he could just run home. He would get wet, and probably ill, too, but he was just so bored. His phone was low on battery, and wandering the school halls wouldn't be much better than this. He was out of ways to spend his time.

None of his friends were here, either. Gardening club had been cancelled due to the rain, so Yashiro had gone home with Amane and Tsukasa. Kou just hoped that the twins didn't cause too much trouble for her. Yokoo and Satou had also gone home by this time, as they didn't have any clubs to attend to. The young exorcist didn't know where Mitsuba had gone, but figured he was home, as well.

"Oh? Hella-Lame, Traffic-Safety-Earring Boy? What are you still doing here?"

Kou turned around and came face-to-face with a pink-haired boy carrying a camera. "Mitsuba-kun! I could ask the same thing!"

Mitsuba scoffed. "I asked first."

The blond rolled his eyes but spoke anyways. "Teru-nii has work to attend to, but we only brought one umbrella, so I'm waiting for him to finish. Now, your turn."

"I left my umbrella at home, but I'm too cute to go out into the rain!" Mitsuba pouted childishly. Kou frowned.

"Didn't you see the weather reports? This rain has been scheduled like, all week?"

Mitsuba flushed red and spluttered, affronted. "S-Shut up! I'm too cute to check the weather!" The blond raised his eyebrows, unimpressed. Mitsuba scoffed and looked away, perching himself on the same bench as Kou. He thanked the gods that there was a bit of roof over this bench, otherwise they'd have to wait inside, which was totally lame. It was the worst place to take pictures, through those grimy old windows.

Mitsuba raised his camera to his eye, snapping a picture of the rain falling around a sakura tree. He checked the photo before glancing up at the feeling of being watched.

Kou had leaned over to see the picture he took. "Woah, that's incredible! I think..." He muttered the last part, unsure of whether it was actually good or not in the eyes of the art community. Well, it looked good to him, so, there!

Mitsuba flushed at the compliment, though he would never admit it. The rain slowed to a drip, drop rather than the constant downpour it was before.

"Whatever. It's not the best work."

Kou frowned, before biting his lip and looking away. Though, his face lit up soon enough and he shook the photographer's shoulder. "Woah, look at that!"

It was a rainbow, shining through the diminishing rain. The colors were vivid, and Kou's childish excitement was contagious.

"It's so cool!" Mitsuba raised his camera while Kou grinned excitedly. His blue eyes sparkled at the sight of the rainbow, wide with curiosity and glee.

A snap! shook Kou out of his trance. "Huh? Did you take a picture of the rainbow?"

Mitsuba glanced down at the camera. "Yeah. It really is beautiful."

Days later, Kou started at the sight of a camera on a nearby desk. "Oh, Mitsuba-kun left his camera in the classroom! I'll give it back to him whenever I see him next."

He glanced down at the device in his hands, before deciding that looking through a few pictures wouldn't hurt, right?

Swiping his finger, he looked through the pictures. A dog running through the grass. A nest of birds surrounded by sakura petals. Flowers. The silhouettes of a boy and a girl underneath a tree. The sunset.

He paused.

A picture of a blond boy smiling widely, staring at something off-screen with sparkling blue eyes.

"It really is beautiful."

Kou flushed red and shut the camera off. He walked out of the classroom with a smile.
