universe: alternate universe (detectives/phantom thieves)

summary: Kou tried his best to catch the criminals, he really did, but Hanako somehow became his friend and this pink-haired brat was just so... fascinating. Not cute. Never cute.

Kou groaned and slammed his face into his desk. He was stupidstupidstupid. Of course he let Hanako go, he was his friend, but now Teru was getting involved and he really couldn't handle that right now. Yashiro seemed entirely unaffected by it, but she also had a crush on Teru, and seemed to dislike Hanako (despite agreeing to help find his missing twin brother), so he supposed that that wasn't the best source of comfort.

Well, this anxiety would go away if Teru went away, right? Er— well, Kou didn't want his brother to leave him or anything, but he wanted him to leave the 7 Phantom Mysteries alone, for now. And there was only one way to do that!

He had to prove to Teru that he was perfectly capable of handling the situation himself!

Kou silently pumped his fists to cheer himself on before picking up the case files. It was heavily suspected that the Mysteries would target a large bank tonight, so he would just have to arrest the Mystery attacking tonight. The 7 Phantom Mysteries were never in the same area at once, so this would be the best he could do for now. The most ever seen at once was 3 Mysteries, and even then, none of them were captured.

So Kou would just have to work especially hard if he was going to arrest one. That's fine, though! He can do this!

Kou most definitely cannot do this.

The plan had been going perfectly, which should have been his first warning. The phantom thieves had, in fact, attacked the suspected bank, and it turned out it was Mystery #3 (they had assigned each one numbers, as they only knew Misaki and Hanako's names, which were likely code names or something). Kou had never met Number 3 before, and was excited at the prospect to catch one of the phantoms they knew the least about.

The young detective-in-training spotted the thief right when all the other officers had left the room he was in, going on their patrols. They were hiding behind some conveniently placed boxes by the room's entrance where he, of course, was stationed. By the vault containing most of the valuables. This meant he had to keep his guard up at all times.

That plan was quickly thrown out the window when the thief started screaming. Thus, landing him in the situation he was in now.

"AHHHH! Why are you looking at me like that?! We're all alone, I bet you want to take advantage of my cute self! Pervert! Pervert! Perver—!"

Kou slapped his hand over the (surprisingly cute) boy's mouth, blushing brightly. "Shut up! I'm not a pervert!"

He felt the boy snicker and mutter something that sounded suspiciously like "lame-ass traffic safety earring". The young blond pouted and briefly touched his earring. There was nothing wrong with it!

The pink-haired boy scowled and attempted to take Kou's hand off his face, which he let happen. He needed to arrest this Mystery and get intel on the others! Hanako was far too fickle, and would probably only tell Yashiro anything. So, they had to consult another Mystery.

Though, Kou admitted, this one seemed a little too cocky to say anything.

"Who are you? What's your name?"
