The DPD was as busy as usual, criminals filtering in and out. Victims meekly asking for an officer to give a report. Phones ringing every few seconds. You could almost hear Fowler barking out orders to the newest recruits, poor things. The smell of cleaning materials and deadbeat dads filled your lungs.

Home.

You shuffle past reception, scanning your card then stuffing it back into your pocket. The plastic doors open and you walk past Chris' desk.

"Hey (Y/n)." He says waving, not looking away from his computer.

"Mornin'." You respond, walking towards the break room.

On the counter you see a plastic container filled with scones. You step towards it and look at the sticky note on top. The handwriting was neat and loopy.

Please only take one
     -Officer Chen

"Don't mind if I do.." You pick up one of the scones and put it on a napkin then place it to the side. You open up the cupboard above the coffee machine and look between your two mugs. You decide on the black mug with a memed cat face rather than your white and green one with a silicone grip on the bottom.

You place the mug in the machine and press a few buttons. After a few seconds, your coffee is ready. The cream and sugar were almost empty so you decided to let the next person have it in their coffee. Just plain black coffee like your soul.

Picking up the scone and your coffee, you head towards your desk. By the looks of it, Gavin isn't here right now so you calmly place down your items and sit down. You reach into your pocket and pull out your AirPods. You connect them into your phone, playing Mr. Blue Sky.

You log on to your terminal and check your email. There's nothing new concerning what you're doing today. Usually you get a quick email saying if you're going to do patrol or parking duty.

"Captain Fowler? I don't mean to disturb you but ever since I've joined the force I believe I have been a valuable asset and if you don't mind me asking, I would like to-"

"Cut the bull crap (L/n), you want to be a detective?"

You nod your head, scared of where this is going. He shifts around in his seat.

"Look, when there's another case I'll give you a chance to prove yourself. Until then you'll have to stick with what you have now. I'm sorry, but our current detectives are more than okay. You're a police officer. Take that in stride."

You freeze up for a minute... maybe it's for the best. At least you won't have to be working directly with any assholes.

"Thank you for your time, Captain." You nod your head and walk out the door.

Maybe he reconsidered? No, he would've emailed you in advance.

When Gavin walks in the precinct you shake out of your thoughts. His gruff appearance contrasted with everything around him. He sits at his desk across from yours and sips on his Starbucks coffee.

You stifle a laugh, why Starbucks? There's coffee in the break room.

Gavin looks over at you, "The hell you laughing at now?"

"Oh- oh sorry- nothing. Just continue drinking your triple venti, half sweet, non-fat, caramel macchiato." You break out laughing in the end and you can hear Chris chuckling. Sticking out your hand behind you, Chris spins in his chair and gives you a high-five.
