One thing I love about summer is that the sun sets later, which means that after a long day of work, I get to witness the beautiful warm hues of orange, pink and purple decorate the sky alongside the magnolia white clouds.
The drive to Sejin samchon's company was short but therapeutic, thanks to the sunset. After getting through security, I put the CLS my parents got for my birthday last year into a visitor's lot and was embraced with a side hug from Sejin samchon.
"Aigoo, Hana-yah... It's so nice to finally see you." He greeted me with his signature warm smile - the one I grew up playing with. Being my mother's youngest brother, Sejin samchon was always the playful uncle - my favourite. He spent a lot of time growing up with me. Playing pretend with my children kitchen playset and 4 year-old me. Buying one too many Barbie dolls for 7 year-old me. Taking 13 year-old me to Lotte World and discovering my love for rollercoasters with me.
Our reunion was continued at the famous Thai restaurant a street across the big BigHit building. With way too many Thai delicacies for two ordered, Sejin samchon and I spent two full hours telling each other stories about our careers.
"Wait, what is his name again?" Sejin samchon brought my phone close to face as he narrowed his sight to the face in the photograph.
"Samchon, I think you should get your eyes checked. One more centimetre and you'll faceplant into my phone!" I chuckled.
"Yah, this rascal is my precious niece's first boyfriend. Of course I must take a good long look." He resumed his analysis on the photograph.
"Okay, he's handsome. And you said he's also a dentist?"
"Nae, I met him in one of the dentistry school exchanges. He's also appa's chingu's son. The guy who owns Alpha Medical."
Sejin finally looked up from my phone as he mouths a big 'Wow' - a typical reaction Seojoon gets frequently when people hear his credentials. Perfect grades, perfect look, perfect family background.
"No wonder your parents approve of him so much."
Sejin samchon echoed my thoughts."Well, they were the ones who suggested we date in the first place. Along with his parents. Plus, he's nice and really smart... and busy..." I trailed off. Sejin samchon's expression dropped as concern quickly showed on his face.
He quickly suggested we take the conversation back to his office as the shop was about to close and before I knew it, I was plopped comfortably on the couch of a nice lounge, telling Sejin samchon about all the rocks in my supposedly perfect relationship.
We were nearing our second dating anniversary coming August. And things were starting to get a little mundane in our relationship. After we graduated, I was offered a job in an attractive Japanese hospital so I left, but Seojoon oppa stayed. Because his father had funded him to start up his very own prestigious dental clinic.
Long story short, our long distance relationship made me feel like we've drifted and because of how busy the both of us are, we no longer communicate that frequently. It also doesn't help when you see your boyfriend appearing on Instagram stories and posts of mutuals on Fridays, captioned #TGIF at the French bar.
"Hana, from the way you talk about this Seojoon, it feels like you think he's better than you. He's perfect. But you have to know, you are as perfect as he is. Yes, he is smart, handsome and successful. But so are you." Sejin samchon reasoned.
"I don't know... Omma and appa really like him. I don't want to upset them, nor his parents."
"Listen, Hana. This is your life, you are dating Seojoon. Not your mom, not your dad. You deserve to be happy, you deserve somebody who loves and cherishes you. Somebody who will make you happy. Arasseo?"
At around 11pm, I shared a last toast and hug with Sejin samchon as I walked out of the lounge, with a lighter heart and new determination to have one last talk with Seojoon.
Sejin samchon went back to his office and I was waiting for the elevator to the carpark.
The faint thuds of boots caused me to casually look over to see who has joined me in waiting for the lift, then I realised - I know him.
"Oh... hello, Jung Kook-ssi. What a coincidence."
