It’s officially been three months since Riley asked me to be his girlfriend. He asked me in the cutest way possible. It was the first night I saw his band play, he was about to start their last song called “Dangerous.” His brother Connor started to strum the first few chords, when I saw Riley stare down at me in the front row next to the stage. He just looked at me for what felt like forever, and some girl beside me elbowed me and whispered, “Uhm.. I think he’s staring… at YOU.” I just turn back to her and asked, “But why?”
Then I heard Riley’s voice through the microphone say, “I hope everyone is having an amazing night.” The crowd erupts with woos and cheering. Riley waits till the crowd settles down and continues, “I know it’s only the second day of the semester, but I think I’ve fallen for a girl already.” I hear some girls say aww and the guys of the crowd cheer him on. Riley looks back at me and starts talking, “I want you to see the beautiful girl I’ve fallen head over heels for… Ryland can you please come up here with me?”
I stand there frozen in the crowd when the girl beside me nudges me forward and said, “C’mon girl,” and smiles. Everyone starts clapping as I walk up the stairs to the mini stage, keeping my hands on the railing for balance. I feel knots in my throat and stomach, but keep pushing on trying not to embarrass Riley.
I walk past Connor and a tall brown-haired boy who I assume is Toby, their other brother. Connor pats me on my upper back and says, “Go on, Ryland.” I hear Toby whisper to their drummer Thomas, “Ohhh, so that’s her.” I have no idea how my body is still moving when all I feel is cold and numbness. The only heat I could feel is in the redness of my cheeks. I’m finally next to Riley and he pulls a stool next to me and I whisper, “What the heck are you doing Riley?” He just laughs and says you’ll see before he talks into the mic, “She’s beautiful isn’t she?” The crowd answers with their woos and yeahs. I swear my face is redder than a tomato by now.
Riley continues in the mic while looking at me and says, “I know we’ve just met each other 2 days ago, but I want to keep getting to know you and I’m not gonna take no for an answer. So Ryland, will you please be my girlfriend?” The crowd cheers louder and I see him whisper “please.” I look down at my hands for a moment, then look up. Riley looks slightly worried, but I give him a reassuring smile and say yes.
I feel ringing in my ears when the room erupts with cheering. Riley says, “Yes, good news!” He hugs me and Connor and Toby start strumming again. Riley then starts singing a few measures in:
I fell in love with a criminal.
She stole my heart and I didn’t know.
