Coffee's hair fell in natural curls down her back, her brown eyes swiftly moving over the data in front of her. Her fingers were naturally fast on a keyboard, 200 words in 40 seconds. Was that even possible? It had to have been, for that's what the test results had said. Maria let out an excited gasp as Coffee set back in her chair, the data completely solved, sorted, saved.
"Coffee... that's the fastest anyone has ever solved this data, or ever even been on this level..!!" Maria looked like a forty-year-old fangirl...
"I don't completely understand why I had to do such kindergarten level math, or why you're surprised at my speed. It's not like I beat Near or Mello," Coffee looked up at the older woman. She wasnot completely sure who Near or Mello were, only that they were the top of the whole orphanage.
"No," said Maria, "you didn't beat Near. You did beat Mello, though."
"Oh, great," Coffee said sarcastically. She heard rumors about Mello, appearantly he had horrible anger issues. "Looks like I get to have my head beaten in."
"Oh, honey. You still have one more test, and if you beat Near in that test, then maybe Mello won't be quite as mad." Maria liked to attempt to make Coffee feel better about herself... and try to make her believe that she wouldn't have her face beaten in by the gothic boy. Coffee stood and followed Maria to the next computer. Only, when she got closer, Coffee realized it wasn't a computer, but in front of it, a puzzle.
"Oh jeeze, You're making me solve a completely blank puzzle," Coffee rolled her eyes, unsure why she was even bothering. The room around her had tan walls, hardwood floors, and a white ceiling. Coffee sat in front of the pure white puzzle as Maria dumped it on the table.
"Do it as fast as you can, okay? Three, two, one, go!" Maria said, hitting the button on her timer. Coffee's slender fingers began to quickly build the puzzle. 20 seconds. Half way done. Coffee built a fancy 'L' with black letters in the upper left-hand corner.
"Done," said Coffee quickly. Maria stared at the timer, then, she stared at the blond teenager.
"... Near's time was one minute and 33 seconds, for this 4,000 piece puzzle..." Maria said. "Your time was 45 seconds..." She seemed surprised, but Coffee's expression didn't change.
"I guess I'm number one now?" Coffee said quietly.
"Congrats, you're L's first successor," Maria said.
"Who? Who's 'L'? Coffee said, putting the pieces of the puzzle back into the box it came in. Maria looked surprised.
"You havn't heard the rumors yet??"
        "No."
"Well... L is the world's greatest detective, he came straight from this orphanage, Wammy's house, and now he always needs to successors, so it's you and Near." Coffee stood up, not speaking, and looked around.
"I'm going back to my room for the evening. I do not wish for dinner, good night." Coffee walked to floor two, room twenty two. Her brain hurt from Maria, she was getting on her nerves. Coffee changed into grey sweat pants, and a black t-shirt. She brushed out her hair and then braided it to the side. When she had finally climbed into bed she sighed, of course, she had left the light off. She stared at the taunting, stupid switch. Suddenly, it felt like a blast of wind left her head, and the light turned off. Coffee gasped, sitting back in her bed. The room was dark, what was that? Telekenesis? Her heart beat heavily in her chest as she slowly crawled under the covers. It's okay, she told herself, It's just my mind playing tricks. I got up and turned off the switch, probably, I'm just tired. Sleep, yeah, that's what I need. Sleep.

It was finally morning. Coffee's brown eyes fluttered open and she looked around the room. Memories of the light switch flooded her mind and she shook her head. No, no, calm down. Coffee, not my name, no, I need real coffee right now..!! She shot up from her bed and proceeded to open her dresser from across the room like the weirdo that she is. It opened. Her hand was still in the position of using The Force and she stepped back.
"Seriously?!" She said, running a hand through her hair. The braid fell out and she cussed, leaning down and picking up the hair tie. Maria knocked on her door twice before it opened slowly. A head of white hair stepped in.
"Hey- you're not Maira," said Coffee, looking at the boy in front of her.
"You are correct. I am Near," said the boy.
"Oh great, are you here to beat me up because I took your place at number one?" Coffee rolled her eyes, digging through her dresser for a shirt to wear. Aha, she had found one, her Fall Out Boy shirt. She pulled out some jeans, socks, and under garments.
"No, I'm here to introduce myself," said Near.
"Oh great, you're still here." Coffee said, pulling off her shirt. Near looked surprised.
"Do you have no modesty???" Near said, turning his head to the side with a slight blush.
"Calm down, I'm wearing a bra," Coffee said, causing Near to bush more, although Coffee couldn't see him. She pulled on her fall out boy shirt and pulled off her sweat pants, pulling on the blue jeans.
"There, I'm done changing. Jeeze." The white-haired boy looked back at Coffee, his blush slowly fading.
"Urm.. Okay. I wanted to take you to get coffee, so we could meet," Near said, handing her the hair brush. Coffee nodded her thanks and began brushing her hair.
"Correction, so you can kill me and regain your place as number one." Coffee said, letting her hair fall down in a cascade of blond curls.
"N-No! I told you, I want to meet you. My, you have quite a sense of humor, don't you?" Near said nervously. This kid was annoying, and didn't act anything like everyone said he was like. Coffee's face stayed serious, causing Near to face-palm himself.
"I'll just bring you coffee I guess. What do you want?" Near said quietly.
"Black coffee," she said, sitting on her couch and reading a book she had bought.
"Brave girl," he said, but then stopped. "Sugar is disgusting," he continued. "Not brave girl, smart girl. I'll bring you your black coffee."
