It looked just like how I saw it from the outside. Dusty, old, with the antique furniture. My friends were looking around the dark room, the steady pitter-patter of the rain in the distance, wind blowing in every now and then.
"I can't believe we're doing this!" Amber said, brushing the dust off of her black hoodie as the house slightly creaked. Adeline pulled out her flashlight and shone it around the room and out the door. It looked like it had been a nice house before it's abandonment. It definitely looked bigger on the inside. We'd come in through a living room window, and the front door was visible if you looked out the open door.
"Well, what are we waiting for?" Evey exclaimed, loud enough to take me snap back to attention. "Let's explore! We only have a couple hours before we have to go back. We're most definitely not splitting up, understand? I want to go... there." She pointed near the front door, where there was a flight of stairs going up and down.
"Woah woah woah, since when were we communist?" Sahithi jokingly said, making us laugh, the laughter echoing out the door, making it sound hollow. "Sure, the foyer is a nice place to start off with, since we would've started there if the door hadn't been boarded up. But let's vote."
"Alright, let's go!" Evey said as she grabbed Amber's hand and ran out the living room door.
"Wait, Evey! I literally just said..." Sahithi trailed off.
Anika laughed as she followed Evey. Caroline leaned close and whispered "Ship!" Before running out into the foyer. I laughed and ran after her, Sahithi and Adeline following close behind.
The foyer was decorated beautifully, paintings and furniture placed perfectly along the faded wallpaper. In the center were the two flights of stairs, with a chandelier hanging above it on the second floor. To the right of the stairs was the living room, and up ahead what seemed to be a small sitting area, then a dining room and kitchen.
We were all gathered at the base of the stairs talking, when Adeline said
"Isn't it strange," We all paused our conversations to look at her. "The furniture is all still here, like the family was in a big rush to get out. But what was it that caused the rush?"
"Let's not think about that." Caroline quickly said to break the tension.
"But guys, she has a point-" Anika started.
"What, do you actually believe in the stories?" I interrupted. "We're just here to have fun, not scare the crap out of ourselves." Silence was skipping around us, whistling a silent tune. A particularly strong wind blew outside, making the house creak and groan, the windowpanes shudder.
"Come on, let's go," Evey urged us, in a tone that wasn't her usual extroverted self. She pulled out her flashlight as she speed-walked up the flight of stairs, not once looking back.
