Chapter 24

Dustin knew before it happened. He did not have to see his sister or Erin plunging over the edge of the canyon to know that was going to be the outcome. He had felt it as it course through her thoughts. He tried to tell her not to, he felt the words form on his lips but they just parted and the words just remained trapped there.

He felt his limbs go weak as a part of him rushed from his body in a knee-jerking moment. This was a bad dream. It was only a nightmare and the image of Misty tumbling with Erin over the edge of the cliff was just some twisted play of his mind. It was not real, it could not be.

But he knew it was as real as the goosebumps that pricked his flesh, as real as his heart that sped in his chest with wild crazy erratic beats. He knew it had happened because he felt all Misty did and thought. She had deliberately let down the barriers and gripped him with all her emotions as she dragged him into her world.

He felt suffocated as it swirled around him and he fell to the ground in a black swirling void. She had nothing to lose if both Erin and she were dead; in death, he would be completely Hers Only

Earlier when Erin had rushed to tackle Misty and he had quickly made it to Lisa and grabbed both her and the post before she went toppling over the deadly edge he felt something that crippled his sense of relief, he had heard the police speak as he made quick work to untie Lisa and that was when he knew what it was; felt it as if he was the one thinking it. They had lost and Misty had won.

He felt it too when she died. He lost a part of him. It played over and over in his mind as he lay on the ground lost and broken. He had made to shout for her to stop but Erin who was so focused on preventing her from getting loose was not paying close attention to the fact that they too were standing close to the edge, so with a quick pivot and shove against her prisoner Misty, Erin and few posts that were not made for pressure went flying over the edge.

When she died the life rushed from his body in a harsh expulsion of breath. He staggered to his feet and pulled himself from the dark void and made it to the edge but he was dragged back and voices played about him like distant sounds trying to seep into the dark recess of his troubled mind. For the first time in four years, Dustin cried.

This was not supposed to happen. Misty vowed that she would ensure that they never have to suffer any more pain because of their childhood. He knew she lied and to be honest he turn a blind eye to it and preferred to remain ignorant. He was too tired to pull Misty from the dark cruel void so he drowned himself in music and made sure he hid all the signs of her crumbling existence.

Yes, he had deleted all the pictures and that wretched collage on her computer, Erin's jacket and the broken pieces of his cellphone were hidden in the back of his closet until he found the opportune time to discard them. She had saved him when they were children and from ever since then he made sure he saved her.

He looked to the precipice and gave an agonised wail. It was all in vain. The lies, the blackmail, the dark secrets he kept locked inside were all for nothing.

How could she tell him to let go when clearly she kept holding on, kept wanting something that was denied to her by life cruel play on their childhood.

They promised each other that they would always be together, she told him in Grenich that she would never do it again but she did only this time she took the fall as well.

He shrugged from the hands that held him and walk to the precipice knowing that everyone present was on edge as they stood ready and poised to foil his suicide attempt. Little did they know he had dreams too big to demolish by such a cowardly act.

It was too dark to see the mess that Misty had created, but his mind saw it nonetheless. He swallowed hard the bitter bile that rose to his throat and turn away from the endless blackness below.

Today Misty would cement herself not as the girl who saved her brother from a wretchedly abusive drunkard of a father, but as haunting for the many teenagers that would come to Look Out Point.

He scoffed as he thought of how time would mangle the story and turn the details into a cruel bitter take of what really was. However, he doubted if time would punish him less severely because the many times Misty found herself being obsessed with someone he went in and deviously cleaned up the mess allowing her to do it not once or twice but often enough it became the weight that finally broke the feeble cord of Misty's madness.

In Grenich they bearly got away and seeing they were only a few months away from no longer being eligible as wards of the state it had taken him manipulating their circumstances to his benefit by blackmailing of a paedophile caretaker who wanted very much to have his deeds hidden the way he wanted Misty's.

He turned and walk back to the car his steps taking him from the bondage that being Misty's twin had been but the flashing lights of the police car and the dark cold night sent images of another dead boy and a beautiful girl battered and broken by Misty's need to be loved to his mind.

He was free it was over. Fedrick and Dorothy now have their justice their broken spirits were no longer bound hereby Misty. Mr Cameron and little Whitney who had been Misty's first cruel collage will have no more collages added to theirs, it all ends here and when he sat in the car he found himself starting to relax because in all honesty freedom was sweet.

Misty finally paid the cost of her attractions or better yet her obsession.
Life could never give Misty the love that she wanted so she chose death to give it. It was always her desire to have Erin as Hers Only, but life played the cards in death's favour. He only hoped time was not ready for him to pay his debt for his part in it all.
