Dustin woke from his sleep with a start. He knew something was amiss with Misty. He could feel it vibrating through his bones, its grip on him was stifling and he found himself sitting up in bed taking a deep lung full of breath as his heart raced. She was in emotional agony.

She was tearing apart. He loved being able to be connected to someone but oftentimes when her feelings were heightened it left him drained on an emotional level that left him weak, he had not felt emotions raging like this through her in a long time. It left him with deep dread.

He flung off the sheet that was twisted about his naked legs and reached for the sweat pants on the chair by his bed and was plunging his legs into it as he made for the door causing him to almost stumble.

Her room was down the end of the hall and he saw that her door was open, rushing into the dark interior with her name on his lips he stared around frantically. He was scared of what he thought he was going to find.

He stood letting his eyes further adjust to the darkness ensuring that she wasn't hurt but as he tried to do so he heard the distinctive sound of something crashing into something. Alarm surged through his body like lightning bolts through a stormy sky.

With legs of rubber, he sprinted towards the sound so many emotions going through him he felt surreal. He prayed that she was ok, he knew Misty was not averse to doing herself harm when she was so distraught. Despite how she may be he knew her pains, her fears and she was the realist thing he had to a family and he loved her.

When he reached the living room her emotions gripped him like a tight leash and he almost stumbled from it.

"Misty?!"

He was not sure she had heard him but as he made to call out to her again he saw her turn towards him, her eyes red from crying and filled with a pain that shook him to his very core.

He gasped as this scene threatened to bring him back to that night years ago in their home in Michigan, a night he had buried deep away in the darkest crevice of his mind.

"Go away!" she said through clenched teeth.

"For fuck sake don't push me away!" he said coming to stand by the sofa and pulling her rigid frame up so that he could look directly at her. "I am here for you, you know that."

"Ha!" she scoffed. "Like everybody else, Dustin you're there when I am doing what it seems should be pleasing your innate sense of right or wrong."

"Listen Misty wrong and right exists for a reason. You can't expect us to turn a blind eye to that."

"Leave me alone!" she cried pulling away. "I don't need you patronizing me."

"I can't, every flipping emotion coursing through your veins is running through me like an electric shock. I was fast asleep when whatever you were going through pulled me from my sleep.

I might not be there for you how you're expecting me to, but am here. I can't tell you I can support some of your behaviour----"

"And I never ask you to. I never ask you to come down here and give me your bull either. I will get through this on my own, all I have to do is let him see she needs to get out of the picture. Like dad she needs to get out the picture," she said cutting him off and pulling from his grip.

He felt dread rush through him and he reached for her but she boxed his hand away and made to leave but he knew he had to know what was going on, Misty referring to their dad had him trembling now with fear.

"Please come back and talk to me. Let me listen to what it is", he called softly after her. "Please you're my sister and if it hurts you I hurt too."

He watched her stop and turn around as if giving in to his request but before she could fully give in the light snapped on and Linda said from the foot of the stairs.

"Are you guys ok?"

Shit, Linda had lousy timing!

Mumbling something rude under her breath Misty walked away and pushed Linda rudely from the stairway and left Dustin standing with an apprehensive feeling twisting at his gut. It had been a long time since he had felt afraid, but now the familiar feeling was seeping into his body and sending his heart beating with dread.

He closed his eyes and tried to push the feeling away. The past rush to him as he fought against the one feeling he told himself he would never allow himself to feel again.

He swallowed visibly as his eyes flew open and his hand shook as that one memory robbed him of that vow he had made to himself. He was very much afraid and all he knew was he would not succumb, he would not let it win for him and Misty had come too far to be dragged under the tides of the past and its ability to destroy their present. He knew he had to find out what was going on.

Misty was too uptight and it was something he knew he should not overlook, but as he was going to find out life work after its own plan and that Misty's present situation that fueled the ability to tear their world to shreds and also that you can never stop the inevitable.
