Chapter 1: The days until college are "burning" away

CHAPTER I

PERCY

"If you call this a joke, you're not funny." Jason smiled curtly and sarcastically to Percy's remark.

"It's not a joke. I'm bad, but not that bad," Jason tried for a smile, but even Piper looked at him with remorse. " He sighed. "Okay, maybe I'm worse. But anyway, I swear on my life I saw Festus last night."

Percy whistled. "Dude, that's like swearing on the River Sytx. Expect, not as bad."

Annabeth slapped him. "That's besides the point, Seaweed Brain." Her eyes focused on Jason, which kind of irritated Percy, because she once told him about how perfect Jason was, he seriousness and kindness and yada-ya-ya.

"Was Festus flying or-"

"Crash landing. I'm not sure where, but as the son of the God of the Uni--I felt Festus in the air. I remember the feeling from the Juno quest."

Percy scowled. Jason was pretty perfect, considering the fact that guy never ever bragged. Luckily for him, Piper would kill Annabeth if she was even slightly intrested in Sparky--meaning she would already be dead but she wasn't. (Wow, that was a lot of thinking!)

"I thought you said you saw Festus," Percy said stupidly.

"I did. The skies agreed it was him is all," Jason snapped back.

Percy smiled slightly and noticed Nico jogging over.

You're not my type. The words shouldn't have irriated him, but they sure did.

"Guys, it's Leo, he's not--"

"Your type?" Percy blurted, then covered his mouth.

Annabeth looked at him, her expression reading DUDE! She kicked the back of his leg.

Percy's face burned as Nico studied him carefully. Nico sighed and turned away,looking at Jason and Piper, completely ignoring Annabeth and Percy.

"Leo's not dead. So I guess it's possible you saw him." He turned to Annabeth and frowned. "I thought college started today."

"I-it did," she managed, her face red. "Reyna said we could start next week because it was just review."

Nico smiled curtly. "Percy needs it, don't you think?"

Annabeth covered her mouth, shaking with laughter.

"I rest my case," he said somenly, then turned to leave.

"He got you, Seaweed Brain. But you totally derserved it."

Percy smiled weakly and nodded. "I can't believe I said that..."

"That was a little too sassy," Annabeth agreed. "You should take a manners class. What class are you taking anyway?"

Percy shrugged. "Dunno. I'll figure it out in time."

Annabeth rolled her eyes and kissed his cheek. "Figure it out, Seaweed Brain. I got some packing to do while you do some researching. Ask Chiron or Grover for help, beause, let's be honest, you'll need help." She giggled to herself and walked over to Athena's cabin.

She sure was happy.

Percy knocked impaiently on Cabin One's door.

"Jason! Tell me you aren't somewhere else."

The door creaked open.

Jason looked down at Percy with his hair out of order.

"Um, you okay dude?"

"Not really. All this planning for building is kinda throwing me out of order." He put on his golden glasses and yawned. "Thanks for waking me up, dude."

"Was that sarcasm--"

"No. I couldn't get out of this dream and you woke me up out of it." Jason looked wistfully past Percy. "Anyway, what's up, dude?"

"It's about New Rome. I don't know what class to take--"

"Hmm, are you any good at calming people or things?"

"Um, I trained a wild Annabeth so pretty good."

Jason managed a tired smile. "Take thearpy. Now if you'll pardon me, I have to plan with Nyssa for Kym's collectable toys."
