L A N A

The noises seemed to be coming from far away, as if throughout a dense cloud.

"...You got blood on your face, you big disgrace, Waving your banner-"

" 'Lo?", Lana grumbled in her sleep, and immediately held the phone a foot away from her ear.

"DON'T LET THEM STOP THE PARTY!!"

"Ally?"

"Did you know that it's equal to the length from your thumb to your index finger?", her best friend giggled on the other end.

Lana sighed. "I'm coming over, where are you?"

She was definitely high, and not the good kind.

Twenty minutes later, she was forcing Alyse in the passenger seat.

"But my gals...", she pouted, traces of cocaine evident around her nostrils and sweaty wrists. "Yes, they are in the backseat", placated Lana, as she started to drive away. This seemed good enough for Alyse, who immediately slumped against the window without a look behind. The night was quiet, it had started to rain...

Just then, Lana heard the loud wailing of sirens that jolted her from her lingering sleep. "Shit", she swore and began to floor it. Even the daughter of the Chief Inspector couldn't slip if found in presence of, or consuming drugs.

She rounded a corner, determined not to let the police catch up. The headlights fell on a crossing figure with a cigarette dangling from their mouth.

Before the electrical signal from her brain could reach her foot on the brakes, she hit the person hard; who on contact with the speeding vehicle, flew a couple feet away and hit their head on the curb. Numb with panic, Lana got out and saw the lights glinting off many chains and piercings.

"Alex", she whispered. No, no, she couldn't have. She ran back to the car, drenched, and put it in drive, reversing and turning the corner, a longer route home.

Even through the sheer panic, a clear thought process began in her mind. She called the emergency number, told them where the accident had taken place. Just after, the battery died.

Alyse stirred a bit. " 'S'matter? "

"It's all your fault."
