-AN: So remember how the show is set in the early 1900's, well I'm trying to keep the fic set in that same-ish time period, so things like cameras and radios were the older kinds.-

{Night Shift}

Chapter 12:

A few days later, I came into work at my normal time, checking in with Mustang before going to see Envy. However, he stopped me when I was about to leave. "Actually, you're going to be working the night shift for this week." he said, and I raised a brow. "Oh?" I asked, and he shuffled his papers on his desk. "The usual night guard is out sick this week, it's a serious flu, so be prepared to work more than this week if needed. You see, no one else wants to work night shifts." he elaborated, and I rolled my eyes. "Ah, so I'm the pack mule." I said jokingly, and he laughed. "What do you expect, you sided with a homunculus. Anyway, there will be significantly less staff on during your hours so you people won't come by to check up on you. Be on your guard." he explained, and I nodded. "Yes sir."
After I told Envy, I went straight home to pack a duffle bag with fun activities! I smiled wide, no one would interrupt us all night! The thought of sneaking out again crossed my mind, but I think that would be too risky. So, I settled on bringing a few things to keep us entertained.

When I got there, I tried to hide my involuntary smile, but soon realized I didn't need to as there was barely anyone on duty. Central was so barren, only one or two people passed me as I walked down the dark hallways. "Finally! Do you know how booooring it is when everyone refuses to even look at me?" Envy pouted as I walked towards his cell. "Yeah.. I'm sorry." I apologized, giving him a sympathetic look. I quickly moved to unlock the cell and went inside, plopping my bag down in the middle of the room. "But, on the bright side!" I said, smiling wide. "There's practically no one here, so I can stay in here all night!" I exclaimed happily, and he laughed. "Hah, nice." he said, voice seemingly calm, even though I could see it in his face that he was excited. I bent down to unzip the duffle bag, pouring out its contents on the ground. "Okay! So, I brought snacks and candy, a few crosswords I've been saving from the paper, because you're so smart and all." I said, and he laughed "Well I have been around for hundreds of years." he mocked, and I chortled. "I also brought a camera! So we can take pictures.. If you want?" I asked, pointing to my old portable camera. He raised a brow, "You want to take pictures of.. Us?" he asked, and I nodded. "It'll be.. Something to remember each other by when we're apart." I explained, and he shrugged. "Alright."
I huffed as I brought out my portable radio, setting it down neatly in front of us. "And this is my radio! I thought, when we'd finished everything else we could listen to mystery stories on the air! They always do that around 1am." I said cheerily, and he smiled. "Well, I guess anything is better than being bored out of my mind like I usually am." he retorted, and I laughed. "Hah, yeah I bet."
We spent the next few hours eating snacks and talking, then did a few crosswords. I finally convinced him to take a picture with me, and held out the camera, getting close and comfy against him. He blushed slightly and looked away. "Come on, you gotta look at the camera!" I begged, and he rolled his eyes. "Tch fine." he agreed, turning to face the camera. I smiled wide and put my arm around him as I snapped the picture. When it came out, I laughed at the result. In the picture, he was obviously trying to glare at the camera, but since he hadn't expected my arm around him, his face flushed and eye twitched at the very last moment. "Hah! You're adorable!" I squealed, and he growled. "God dammit, that was a dirty trick!" he complained, and I grinned deviously, "All is fair in love and war." I said snarkily, and he grinned back. "Oh this is war alright." he mumbled under his breath. I was a bit worried, but nothing came of it, so I let it go.
It was around 1, and I was setting up the radio, when Envy piped up. "What was your job.. Before all this?" he asked, and I smiled at his interest. "I was a negotiator." I responded, and he chuckled. "Oh? But didn't you ever want to be a state alchemist? You're pretty talented.. For a puny human that is." he muttered the last part, and my smile faded slightly. "Well.. I never particularly enjoyed using alchemy." I said, and he raised a brow. "It reminded me to much of when I um.. Opened the gate." I explained timidly. He sighed and leaned back on his palms as he sat. "Ah." he said simply, and I smiled again, pulling my hand through my hair as I reminisced. "My goal was never to kill anyone. I knew the only way to do that in the Army would be to join as a negotiator." I spoke, and Envy tilted his head slightly. "Then why join the military at all? It's mainly killing anyway." he asked, and I shook my head. "That's exactly the reason. My parents were both state alchemists.. And I don't know, I thought maybe.. I could right what was wrong with the world. Slowly of course. It's quite ambitious I know." I laughed, and he shook hid head. "Not at all. I bet you could do it." he said sweetly, and I smiled at him. "Thanks Envy. But not all hope is lost! After all, Mustang is on his way up, and his goal is relatively the same as mine! He's stopped most fighting and is working on alliances now, isn't that great?" I beamed, to which Envy rolled his eyes. "Tch, no. I think you forget, (Y/n), I love war and fighting. I enjoy seeing pathetic humans suffer of their own stupidity." he explained, and I could feel a bit of his manic energy making its way through. "Well.. True but, um... Hm..." I hummed, trying to think of a good reason for him to like what was happening. He scoffed and scooted a bit closer to me on the cot. "(Y/n). The only person I actually give a shit about us you. If war breaks out, and you get deployed, that's when I'll start hating it. And I'll probably escape and kill everyone on the opposite side so there won't even be a war anymore." he chuckled wildly, and I sighed. "Yeah.. Or we could just run away together." I suggested, and he raised a brow. "I guess that's another okay option.." he shrugged, and I laughed a little. Our conversation was brought to a close as the static from the radio suddenly morphed into words. "Alright folks! It's 1am, get ready for 2 hours of radio mysteries!" The announcer spoke, and I grabbed the blanket, throwing it on top of us as we sat against the wall on his cot. After a few minutes, I looked up to him, hesitantly moving closer to him until our arms bumped. He flinched slightly, but relaxed almost instantly wrapping his arm around my shoulder and pulling me right up against him. We listened to the radio for a while, the narrators crisp and crackly voice echoing slightly down the hall. The moonlight shown through the small window at the top of the cell, shining dimly on both of us. I rested my head on his shoulder after a while, and he didn't seem to mind. Eventually, I felt my eyelids get heavy, and I happily accepted the blessing of sleep, feeling light as I drifted off into slumber.
When I woke up, it was barely light out, the suns rays having yet to peek up over the horizon. My body felt heavy, and I didn't want to move, so I just stayed where I was. Soon, I noticed a few things. I was laying on my side, the blanket I brought under me and the other on top. Also, a buzzing in my chest arose as I felt Envy snuggled up right next to me, one arm around my waist, holding me close, and the other hand on my head, gently massaging my scalp. My face flushed a deep shade of red as I realized that we were spooning, his body pressed against mine intimately. I felt myself stiffen slightly at the realization, nerves getting the best of me, but I didn't want to move. Unfortunately though, he'd seemed to notice my action, pausing his hands movement in my hair. For a minute, we both stayed silent and completely still. I was a bit worried that he thought I was uncomfortable, which I wasn't, so I used all my courage and shifted myself so I was facing him. He blinked down at me as I stared up at him, small smile and flush still on my face. "Hey." I whispered, and he smiled back. "Hey." he said gently, voice deep and sweet, calming almost as he continued playing with my hair. I knew my locks would be beyond tangled when this was over, but I didn't care, I never wanted him to stop. I closed my eyes and let myself relax against him, nuzzling my hair closer into his chest. This was heaven.
