Alex was already waiting for me outside my class. That shocked me. She wasn't the type to wait for people, people waited for her.
What surprised me more was who were with her. Dexter was trying - and failing - to strike up a conversation with her and standing a bit further away, scowling at the floor, was Sebastian.
"Why are they-?" I began.
Alex cut me off, "-they decided to tag along."
Sebastian piped up, "I did not! Dexter dragged me along."
"Dragged? You asked if you could follo-" Dexter started but was tackled to the floor by Sebastian before Dexter could complete his sentence.
I ignored the two boys who were rolling around on the waxed floor, grappling at each other's hair.
"So, you wanted to watch a movie?" I asked.
"I may have changed my mind."
"Where do you want to go then?"
Alex gave me a lazy smile, "How does your hangover feel?"
A grin spread across my face, "Like I could use another one."
----
We used our fake IDs to get into a nearby club. The two boys had fake IDs too but I didn't question them as it was fairly common to own one nowadays.
"So, why are we in a club?" Dexter asked.
I reached up to untie my hair from its high ponytail and shook it out, "My new years resolution is to get drunk everyday."
Dexter turned to face Alex, "How about you?"
"I support my friend's rather dumb resolution," She replied.
I hooked my arm around her shoulders, grinning, "You just want some champagne!"
"That too."
Dexter scoffed, "Sorry babe, but beer will always be better than champagne."
There was a few seconds of silence as we stared at him in disbelief.
"I challenge you to a drinking contest. Whoever gets drunk first loses. If I win, you have to run into school and hump a locker," I exclaimed.
I didn't know why I said it but I knew I wouldn't lose. Or maybe I wanted a reason to get drunk out of my mind other than just feeling like it.
Either way, it didn't work because he refused.
Yes, Dexter refused a drinking contest.
My jaw dropped as I stared at the boy in silence.
He just shrugged, "I don't want to act like an idiot in front of Alex."
"You act like an idiot all the time, why stop now?" commented Sebastian.
Dexter shot the boy a dirty look and I sniggered, "Coward."
"Also, I bet I would lose so no point in trying."
I passed him, patting his shoulder," Smart boy."
Shouldering my way through the crowd of dancing drunk people, I found the bar and sat down on the tall stool.
"So, what can I get you?" the bartender asked.
She did a double take, "You're rather...young looking."
"Thank you," I groaned dramatically. "I really didn't think I would age so slowly, having three hooligans as my sons and working night shifts at the local hospital. I'm so glad the kids are in school now, I don't have to deal with all the shouting and fighting for a few more hours."
