Detention.. I've been there before. But I that wasn't my fault. I've never gone to detention when it was actually my fault. So embarrassing! And to top it off... I pulled poor Neighthan down with me. I felt so guilty! I can't imagine what he must be thinking of me.
Not many were in detention today. I recognised some mansters from the casketball team and Neighthan of course. He was sitting in the corner, looking very uncomfortable. He did so not belong there. Another wave of guilt rushed over me, before I finally went inside and walked over to Neighthan.
"Can I sit next to you?" I asked, wondering if it was too late just to turn around and sit somewhere else. But Neighthan nodded with a smile. So I sat down next to him. I should probably just let this whole thing go. I don't want to get into more trouble.
Mr. Hack entered the classroom with a stack of papers. He handed them out and frowned at all of us.
"Welcome to detention. You have 2 hours to write an essay about whatever you want. As long as it's something useful." he said grumpy.
"Now, I have to take care of some personal business. I'll be back in 30 minutes, and I expect all of you to behave!" he stated and quickly left the classroom again. The second the door closed shut and Mr. Hack was long gone, small chatter around the room began. I tried as much as I could to close out all the noise and start writing the essay. What should it be about? I could write about how bad a girlfriend I was or how boring detention is? Or maybe something more cheerful? I could write about how excited I was for Cleo's party next week? I don't know.. my brain is mush.
"Hey Frankie," Neighthan said and took my hand. Was this real? Did he forget that I sent us to a 2 hour long detention?
"Hey," I said back. Neightan had such kind eyes, it was nice to look at them without them flickering off somewhere else following a change of subject.
"You alright?" he asked. I nodded and laughed nervously.
"What are you writing about?" he asked again.
"Not sure. Something fun." I said. "Something that will take my mind off of detention." Neighthan chuckled. It was nice to hear it again. Was he completely over the whole 'me sending us to detention because I couldn't shut up' -incident?
"Sounds like a plan." then there were silence between us again. I could feel that we both wanted to say something to break the silence. But what?
"I'm really sorry I got us in detention," I then said. He smiled as if he was saying "It's okay. I forgive you."
"But I just feel like you haven't been yourself lately," I added. His smile turned into a frown. I knew I should've kept shut. But I had Draculaura in my ear assuring me that finding out what was bothering him was a good idea to strengthen our bond.
"I'm just saying that if we just talk about it. Our bond will become much stronger." I assured. Neighthan shook his head.
"I don't think it will, Frankie. And I really don't want to talk about it in detention while there are other people listening." he said.
"C'mon they're not listening to what we're talking about." I took a quick look at the basketball boys that threw paper planes at each other. They were definitely paying zero attention.
"Frankie, I... I don't know how to tell you this."
"I'm a big ghoul. I can take it."
"I don't want to hurt your feelings."
"You won't, I promise."
"Yes, I will..."
"No, stop I..."
"Frankie, I'm breaking up with you."
The room went silent as a tomb. Everyone stopped what they were doing and looked at Neighthan and I. I tried so say something, and respond in some kind of way. But I was speechless. It was as if I was having a malfunction. I couldn't tell if I was charged or drained completely.
"Frankie I'm so sorry. I would've told you somewhere private, but..." Neighthan tried to explain, but I heard nothing. I just saw his mouth move, and felt my eyes watering up. I didn't want to make a scene and say something stupid, so I decided to leave.
"I gotta go." I said and stormed out. I needed to go to the ghouls bathroom and get some paper for my eyes. If my tears touched my bolts I could spark, and I didn't want more incidents.
"Frankie, wait!" Neighthan yelled after med. But I was already gone..
