STAFFING

Ø A management function that determines human resources needs, recruits, selects, trains, and develops human resources for jobs created by an organization.

Ø It is undertaken to match people with jobs so that the realization of the organization's objective will be facilitated.

Human Resource Planning

Ø The planned output of any organization will require a systematic deployment of human resources at various level. To be able to do it, the manager will have to involve himself with human resource planning.

Ø Activities:

o Forecasting

§ Is an assessment of future human resources needs of the organization in relation to its current capabilities.

o Programming

§ Means translating the forecasted human resource needs to personnel objectives and goals.

o Evaluation and control

§ Refers to monitoring resource action plans and evaluating their success.

Recruitment

Ø Refers to attracting qualified persons to apply for vacant positions in the company so that those who are best suited to serve the company may be selected.

Ø Sources of applicants

o Organizations current employees

o Newspaper advertising

o Schools

o Referrals from employees

o Competitors

Selection

Ø Refers to the act of choosing from those that are available the individuals most likely to succeed on the job.

Ø Its purpose is to evaluate each candidate and pick the most suited for the position available.

Ø Ways of determining the qualification of job candidates.

o Application blanks

§ Provides information about the people's characteristics such as age, marital status, address, educational background, experience and special interest

o References

§ Those written by previous employers, co-workers, teachers, club officers about a person, that might help to learn the character of the applicant

o Interviews

§ Asking series of relevant questions to the job candidates

o Testing

§ This includes an evaluation of the future behavior or performance of an individual.

o Is an objective, standard, measure of sample behavior of the individual
