Chapter 4: Rule Number 1: Never be Alone

Benoît's POV:

I've been thinking all night about that mysterious envelope. From what I understand, it's a threatening letter. I doubt it's really that.

The 6 months of Russian I did in college were useless to me! I went to my pc and found a translator even if it's not very reliable this kind of sites and I started to type the sentences on my keyboard.

"Wow. I knew it!

-What are you talking about, we can hear you screaming all the way to the North Pole." Kelly said, stopping at the guest room door.

I turned my head towards her and from what she told me it looked like I had seen a ghost. "Kelly, I know you told me to stop with this, I know you threw it in the trash, but...

-Did you get it out of the trash? Are you serious?! But it's dirty, Benoît.

-Yeah, well, let me finish. I translated it and... I'll let you see for yourself." I turned the laptop over to her and she came over to read.

"I know who you are. Run away if you can, but wherever you go death will chase you . What the hell is this nonsense?!

-Continue Kelly, read the rest.

-Rule number 1: Never be alone. Seriously? What the hell?! I'm sure you translated anything to scare me!

- Do you really think I have nothing else to do with my life. On top of that, I'm your best friend, and you'd have to be really messed up to make your best friend think that.

-Yep. There's no signature or clues that could tell us who it's from?

-No nothing, nada!

-What if you're not the one who did it? Who could be sending me threats, I have no enemies that I know of.

-I don't know, isn't there someone right now who can't bag you anymore? I don't know, is there? Someone you're a little too pissed off at?

-Oh shit! If you're looking for the people I've pissed off lately, you'll be done tomorrow. I've been kind of on the back burner these days.

-Yes, I know that, but don't you know anyone who's so pissed off at you that they send you threats in Russian?

-Well, no, I don't. Maybe my boss. He's a real scumbag.

- Do you think he'd be capable of doing that?

-He's capable of anything, he hates me more than the Plague.

- Why does he keep you if he hates you?

- I'm useful to him, you know how to take out the trash, make coffee... black without sugar! But no one drinks this..., cleaning offices and stuff. He doesn't want to admit it to himself but I'm the most productive of his employees, that's probably why he hates me simply because I do my job well and I'm useful and probably also because after a while I don't let myself be stepped on anymore and I answer him.

-You bet! I said with a smile

- Oh. She says with wide-eyed eyes.

-What's up?

- Mckenzie!

- Who is he again?

-A bastard! Remember the guy who was hitting on me when I just realized my boyfriend was probably going to die. Or you see the man who was supposed to be Andrew's nurse and also the one who asks me to pay a monster sum in 2 days! There you go... a real asshole...

-Oh, yeah, him. But he knows your address? He must be pretty upset with you to say something like that. Besides, you refused all his advances, it must have put him in one of those states!

-I hope not. Normally he doesn't know it, I never told him anything about it and when I left last time I made sure he didn't find me. Well, I wasn't going to give in to his seduction just so that he would leave me alone and let me see Andrew. Going to this appointment was already an ordeal for me !

- Anyway, there's no one else?

- Alicia's teacher?

- You had a fight with her, too?

-A fight is a big word. Let's just say I told her the cold hard truth... 

-But it's even worse ! Kelly, now I understand why you get threats if you fight with everyone around you at the same time !

-Ughhh it's OK. You're not on my side now ? You don't want to help me find out who wants to hurt me. 

-Tsss. I don't even know why I'm helping you anymore. Well, do you know what any of these sentences mean? "Run away if you can, but know that wherever you go, death will chase you. Rule number one: I'm never alone."

-Absolutely not. This person just makes me realize that I shouldn't be alone and that I'm going to die no matter what... Awesome! That's all I needed in my life !

-I'm not sure it's real and that someone really wants to hurt you, but for your safety and Alicia's I think it's best you come to me. If that person knows your address, they might do it again.

-Yes, you're right. Thank you, Benoît."

Content of the letter in it's original language : Я знаю, кто вы, убегайте, если можете, но знайте, что куда бы вы ни пошли, смерть будет преследовать вас.
