4. No pain

I stopped breathing in preparation for the blinding pain that never came. I watched, tears still falling down from my eyes, as a clump of my hair fell on to the ground. Noticing I hardly reacted, the figure with the scissors froze and the grip on my arms eased ever so slightly.

"What the..." the girl with the scissors whispered.

"Maybe you didn't cut hard enough" the girl behind me said.

"Yeah, maybe" the girl with the scissors said and she reached out and grabbed the whole right side of my hair. Much quicker than last time she cut the whole side off. Nothing. I didn't even flinch. Even though I couldn't see their faces, I could tell by the sound of their fast paced breaths that they were confused. So was I. All my life I was told haircuts hurt and I believed it given that I had witnessed people scream out in pain if they trapped their hair or stood on it. I could not believe what just happened and neither could my two attackers. I survived a hair cut.

"What should we do now? Is she one of us?" I heard the voice behind me say.

"No she's not" replied the other girl. "And we cant just let her go." An eerie silence filled the night air. "We have to kill her"

The word kill snapped me out of my daze and I started thrashing in the girls arms. She didn't hesitate and pulled my arms back so hard I let out a barely human sound.

"Do it quickly" the girl holding me said. The other girl nodded in agreement and lifted the scissors high above my chest but before they could make contact with me, someone collided into her, sending the scissors flying into the wall. My saviour who was also wearing a black hooded jacket had one of my attackers pinned against the brick wall by her arms.

"LEAVE HER AND THIS CITY AND NEVER COME BACK! EVER!" he yelled. The girl nodded slowly and my saviour released her. She signalled for the girl holding onto me to let me go. She obeyed and they both walked off into the night.

Shocked by this turn of events I slowly stood up, removing the tape from my mouth. My saviour had his back turned to me.

"Who are you?" I asked in a voice barley louder than a whisper.

He turned around and removed his hood. I took a sharp intake of breath. It was the bowling ball guy.

"I was walking by" he said in a deep voice. "I heard a scream and headed to this alley where I saw someone cutting your hair. But you didn't black out when she did, didn't scream. You didn't even flinch"

Unsure of what to say, I stayed silent and the bowling ball guy slowly approached me. I didn't feel an urge to back away. He got closer and put his hand on my shoulder and leaned in close. Too close.

"Don't be afraid. Trust me." he whispered. Just as I was about to pull away and ask why I felt a sharp pain in my neck. The guy stepped back and pulled out the needle. The whole world went fuzzy and I collapsed to the ground. I saw the reflection of a street light on his bald head before the whole world went black.
