Prologue

Calming, it had been a relatively calming day for me as I sat in the small coffee shop, sipping my hot chocolate. I had finally gotten a break from applying to colleges, and I had taken an advantage of it.

I tapped soothing rhythms on the little table that I sat in, towards the back of the shop. I let my mind wander onto past memories as I listened to the catchy sounds of Arctic Monkeys played through my earphones.

I spaced out while I took small bites from the powered donut that I had purchased. I hummed quiet tunes to match Old Yellow Bricks and zoned out for a while.

I caught reality a bit later and hurriedly checked my phone, seeing that it was already 5 pm and that time had slipped away from me for almost 45 minutes. I quickly gathered my trash and grabbed my still warm cocoa, throwing the trash away, and telling a goodbye to the shop keeper.

I was still humming the tune of the song as I went to open the door. My hand never made contact with the door, but instead, a solid body. I gasped as my drink spilled all over me and the person, the guy letting out his full Australian accent as he cursed, "Shit."
