SAF
Saf had known it would be good between them. She'd always known from the moment she saw the way Jonathon prowled around the world like he owned it. And she'd known that longing would only make it better – and lord had she been longing for it for a while – but what she hadn't known is just how good it would be.
Sure, she'd slept with others. But she was more transient than most could cope with. Her duties with the Wolf Council had her dragged away at a moment's notice and besides, Saf had never liked to be in one place for too long.
Yet, waking up beside Jonathon, her body sore but thoroughly sated, she was starting to see the appeal of staying in one place.
However, as the logical part of her had known, it was a terrible, terrible idea to sleep with him. And not because she didn't enjoy it – because she was pretty sure she'd be day dreaming of this night for years to come. But because he'd think it meant more than it did.
So she had not been surprised when she woke to find him hovering over her, muttering words of love and future. Nor had she been surprised at his anger when she'd reminded him that she'd said it was just for one night. That she didn't see him as her moonmate, that she never would.
She had, however, been surprised by the hurt that flashed across his face at her words – and even more so at how awfully guilty she'd felt ever since.
And so, four hours later, as the sun hovered high in the sky, Saf found herself sat on the large flat rocks that lined the river. And, as she'd somehow known they would, her closest friends began to appear one by one.
Cassidy arrived first, Kelsey shortly after her. Next came J, and then finally Leah. They sat in silence for a moment before Saf took in a deep breath and went to confess what she'd done.
But before she could speak, footsteps neared them and she looked up to find Elenor walking towards them. She watched the moment the she-wolf noticed them and froze. "Oh-er, hi, sorry, I didn't realise anyone would be here, I'll go, I'll-"
"Wait." Saf called. "Join us, please." She glanced at her friends to find them all slowly nodding their heads. They may have had their differences over the years but in her own way, Elenor had helped them all, even when they hadn't been as kind as they could have been to her. And whatever spidey-sense had dragged her other friends here had obviously led Elenor too.
The she-wolf tried not to show how surprised she was, but Saf could feel it. Yet still, she joined their makeshift circle, giving each of the others a small smile.
Saf smiled at all of her friends before beginning. "I slept with Jonathon." The round of groans was drowned out by Kelsey's celebratory yelling.
"Finally! You guys are going to have such cute kids!"
Saf glared at her. "Not like that. We're not. I'm not. We're not mated." Kelsey's face dropped.
"Saf, what the hell were you thinking?" admonished J. Saf flinched, hurt by the tone but knowing she deserved it.
"I know. OK, I know. It was a mistake. I shouldn't have slept with him."
"Was he good?" Kesley asked with a laugh.
Saf narrowed her eyes at her and growled.
"Protective, much?" Kelsey shot back, wiggling her eyebrows and earning a nudge from Cassidy.
"What did he say?" Elenor asked gently.
Saf shrugged and picked at the hem on her jeans. "That he loves me and was so happy I was finally acknowledging what was between us- oh stop groaning!"
Cassidy levelled her with a look. "Saf, the man's clearly in love with you and if you don't have any intention of claiming him as your own then you need to let him go. It's not fair to sleep with him, knowing he sees you as his."
"No matter how horny you are!" Kelsey teased.
"Kels'!" J elbowed her in the ribs, making the she-wolf laugh.
"Oh please, I have the unfortunate pleasure of living near the house you're staying in – and believe me, I heard e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g you and Logan did last night."
J blushed and twisted to face the she-wolf, her wolf flashing in her eyes in warning. Kelsey laughed and held up her hands in defence.
"OK, OK, I'll say no more. Though I would consider getting some ear muffs for the little cub you're growing in there. Lord knows she's going to need them."
Before J could elbow – or worse – Kelsey again, Saf interjected. "I don't know what I want from him. But-" she took in a deep breath, unwilling to admit this even to herself, let alone to her friends. "But I don't think I want to give him up. I-I guess I've grown kind of used to having him around and I-my wolf, I mean, clearly wants him but I just don't think he's my moonmate."
The five she-wolves watched her in silence, a mixture of hope and pity written on their faces. It was Leah who spoke first.
"Have you considered that maybe he is your moonmate but you're just not open to it? I mean look at Cassidy, it took her ages to figure it out."
"Ages." J and Kelsey echoed.
"Hey! Mean." Cassidy accused, bristling. "But, Leah may have a point Saf. As much as I hate to be the example in this scenario." She muttered, glaring at Leah for effect.
Saf sighed heavily. "Maybe. But I don't know how. I guess I thought I'd just 'know', like you all did. Apart from you Cassidy." The she-wolves laughed and then fell into silence, no one sure of what to say.
"Maybe you just need to give it time. Think about it. And maybe no more sleeping with Jonathon until you actually know what you want because you're only going to confuse him more." Leah offered carefully.
"I know, I know." Saf sighed and ran a hand through her hair. She was tired. She was always tired these days. And she hated the guilt she felt - but hated even more how much her wolf had enjoyed last night. How much she'd enjoyed it.
Jonathon was over bearing, stubborn, convinced that they belonged together. And she was starting to like it. Just a bit.
She'd grown tired of fighting and had given in to her base desires but she felt that he wasn't her moonmate. Surely she'd know?
She signed irritably. "I won't do it again. I was just so-"
"Horny!" Kelsey yelled, making J slap her hand across Kelsey's mouth.
