You only get one chance to live the way you want

My eyes snap towards a male figure, standing in the doorway of the classroom.

He stood tall with combed dark brown hair and eyes to match. His darker blue T-shirt complimented his tan skin tone and his black jeans, the front of the shrug tucked into the jeans and was held there with a leather belt. He wore black sneakers and held only a folded and pen in his hands.

"Ah Mark, welcome to AP chemistry." Mr.Warren smiles, nodding his head.

Mark gives a small wave and walks to my seat.

"Didn't the teacher ask you to move?" He tilts his head, looking at me in the eyes.

Eye contact. I hate eye contact.

"You're new?" I ask not looking at him, tapping my pen lightly on my desk, listening as the other kids pile into the room for class.

"Yeah, so?" He chuckles out. I slowly lift my pen and point to the desk in the front of the room.

"Then you go there." I squint my eye at the empty desk as I keep my pen pointed at it.

"Seats everyone! Seats!" Mr.Warren yells and I smirk to myself, listening as the so called Mark walks to the front of the room and sits down in the empty desk, placing his folder on it and lightly tapping his pen just I was.

"Before I start today, I'd like to announce that we have a new student with us." Mr.Warren smiles at the class, then gestures for Mark to stand up next to him.

When he does, he instantly snaps a glare my way, rage lively dancing in his dark eyes.

I smirk and make eye contact with him for a split second and shoot it back down to my folder.

"He came all the way from Michigan," Mr.Warren announces proudly. "He'll be joining us for the rest of the year, and I except you all to treat him with respect."

Mark takes his seat and Mr.Warren turns to the chalkboard.

"The atomic theory," He starts, "Is the scientific theory of the nature of matter that states all matter is made up of discrete units called atoms." He finishes his sketch of an atom on the chalkboard and turns to the class. "You all are familiar with atoms and this theory since it is included in your everyday lives." He nods and looks at his stapled stack of papers in his hands.

"You are being assigned a project for this theory." He looks up from his papers, and sets it down. "It will be a timeline as to how this theory came to be," He picks up a new stack of papers and places it on one of the lab tables in the front, and does the same with all the rest. The papers start getting passed down the rows. "All the requirements for this timeline will be on this packet, except for one." He states, watching as everyone looks at their packets.

"You all will work in pairs for this project. Working alone is not an option." He says and the class cheers over the news, except for me.

I can't stand working in groups, or pairs, because- I don't like people.

"You may also not put all the work on one person, the whole group must contribute to the project, and I will know if one doesn't contribute. If I catch you in the act, I will fail your group." He looks around the class.

"Get in your pairs and you have the rest of class to work, the project will be due next Monday as soon as you walk into class." He claims and sits down at his desk.

The majority of the class stands up and starts shuffling things around to get in their pairs and working.

I sigh and look at the packet, realizing all the work I'll have to do.

"Hey." A voice speaks up next to me, making me look up to see who it was.

Mark.

He stood in a comfortable stance, looking down at me with a cold glare, his hands in his pockets.

"What?" I ask annoyed as I turn my gaze back to the work packet, I hear him sigh and he pushed the packet down from my hands to the desk. "Work with me for the project." He says and I furrow my eyebrows looking at him. "I'm working alone, get lost." I snap and pick my papers back up.

"He said working alone isn't an option." He says pulling the papers down again.

"I'm working alone. Go away." I reply and snatch my papers from his hands.

"Mr.Warren!" Mark shouts out, getting a few students attention, Mr.Warren look up at Mark.

"What are you doing-"

"Yes Mark?" Warren tilts his head in curiosity and Mark stands up straight. "What happens if someone decides to work alone?" He asks and Warren leans back in his chair.

"I'll fail them for the project. So suck it up if you don't like your options kids." He looks around, making eye contact with me and nodding, then returns to his computer.

I look at Mark in shock and he looks back at me with a smug look on his face.
