Normally, Shikamaru would have opted to jump back to create enough distance to use his shadow possession jutsu. However, this was just taijutsu training and Shikamaru could afford to be a little reckless.
He'd already planned out a few strategies beforehand and had a good idea of how to take Naruto down with the least amount of work. Though, knowing Naruto, it was more likely to drag on.
Damn it, I could be sleeping right now. Shikamaru sighed, regretting all of his decisions up to this point as Naruto charged at him, full speed.
Naruto had no doubt in his mind that he would win. After all, he was going to be the future hokage, and knew that Shikamaru wasn't nearly as strong as him. It was rare that Shikamaru came out to train in the first place.
So all he had to do was over power him! Easy right? Wrong.
As soon as Naruto swung out his first punch Shikamaru ducked under his arm, taking it by the wrist and using their momentum to dig a shoulder under Naruto's arm pit and flip him over with little to no effort.
Offbalance and falling through the air, Naruto kicked his leg under him in an attempt to catch himself before he landed on his butt, being barely successful.
As Naruto awkwardly balanced on one leg, Shikamaru took the opportunity to lightly jerk his arm causing Naruto to lose balance again and really fall this time.
Naruto gasped as he landed on his back as all the air was forced out of his lungs, wondering how Shikamaru was beating him. Shikamaru decided to let Naruto catch his breath while he kept a hold of Naruto's arm, feeling a little bad for taking him down so easily.
As he kept a firm grip he realized how surprisingly well built Naruto's arm was. It wasn't buff or anything like that, but he could feel the muscle underneath as Naruto tensed under his grip.
Shikamaru wondered inwardly if other parts of Naruto was just as well built as his arm, and started to imagine it until he realized Naruto had already caught his breath and was just staring up at Shikamaru with big blue curious eyes.
"Hey, Shikamaru, you ok? I know it's hot out but you're really red. Are you sick or somethin'?"
Shikamaru froze, cringing internally and feeling like his face was going to explode from heat that was definitely not the weather. Other places may have heated up too.
"I wouldn't be worried about me right now Naruto. You're in a pretty bad situation yourself." Thankful that he could reply that smoothly, Shikamaru smirked down at him.
Naruto grinned back and suddenly with some uncanny strength Shikamaru didn't know Naruto possesed, the arm Shikamaru had a hold of was ripped out of his grasp and Naruto was back up in the blink of an eye.
A little bit surprised, Shikamaru silently cursed and jumped back to avoid an incoming punch.
Naruto came at him with a flurry of punches and kicks, keeping Shikamaru on defense, and pushing him back step by step.
Shikamaru wondered how long he could keep up his defense until his back hit a tree and he was forced to catch one of Naruto's punches.
Adrenaline raced through Shikamaru's veins as he took a chance, using his free hand to grab the collar of Naruto's jumper and kicking off the tree, bringing them both to the ground.
Shikamaru landed on top but his victory was short lived as Naruto grabbed his shoulder and used his leg to push Shikamaru over and take the top.
The two wrestled for a bit in the struggle for dominance, and Shikamaru knew he didn't stand much of a chance. Not with his nonexistent physical strength. Although there might have been other reasons too...
After a few more minutes of struggling Naruto's muscles were burning from the non-stop use but he could feel Shikamaru weakening against him. Breathing hard, Naruto pushed with all the strength he could muster, not caring about pinning Shikamaru correctly anymore, just trying to get on top and stay there.
And get on top, he did.
