When Dr Lin woke up, it was dark all around her and as she tried to move; she felt restricted. She felt confined to a chair with her arms tied behind it and each of her feet buckled to the front legs of each side of the chair. The darkness and the cold air that surrounded her made her feel uneasy. The rope that confined her limbs felt like it contained little needles that pierced into her skin each time she moved. She'd been a surgeon for over a decade; thus, she thought she would have gotten used to needles but these felt like shock waves that flared up all over her body with every flinch. She wanted to scream out for help but the pain seemed to be too much to bare, that she didn't know what the outcome of her scream would result to. The creeping silence in the dark felt like she was being monitored. No sound or smells came from around her, the only sound she heard; that drummed into her ears was the frightened beating of her heart. She tried recalling on how she ended up here but all she could remember was getting into her car after she clocked off from work. There was no memory of her driving home. She began questioning herself as to who she may have offended to end up in this predicament. As she recalled every argument and complaint against her, nothing really stood out more than the recent event about the patient Yu Shi Gu. The struggle between his guardians and those who claimed that they loved him was too strange not to be the cause of her current situation. As Dr Lin was lost in thought, thinking of how she could have wronged her kidnappers; she suddenly heard movements echoing all around her and before she could even scream; she blacked out.
Through a loud bang, did Dr Lin wake up to a beaming light that shone on her; like a spotlight on centre stage. The beam of light allowed her see her exact situation; she was covered in dirt and blood as if she was beaten, then thrown into a pit to be buried but the culprit changed their mind and tied her up instead; thinking that she could still be of value. Dr Lin couldn't tell where the blood came from as she felt cuts and bruises all over her body; it was like multiple parts of her body had been opened and stitched back together. Although the pain was excruciating she tried moving her head and body around to see her surroundings.
"You're awake....finally", came a voice from behind her. Dr Lin tried to turn around but it's hand came on her shoulder; squeezing so hard as if it wanted to dip into her shoulder blade and rip it out — the more pressure it put on her shoulder; the more faint she felt. The hand soon let go and Dr Lin felt like it had surely engraved an irreversible mark on her, that she'd always remember it by. The hand did not come back to touch her again but the nose came to her neck; breathing her in and exhaling chills down her spine. The mouth came and brushed past her right ear; opening as if preparing to speak but only leaving a horrible smell of mould and decay, that choked her. "You see....I didn't want to do this but you left me with no choice", the voice said as it moved away from her. 'You should have just done what you were told, instead of disobeying orders", the voice continued. Dr Lin couldn't make out who it was in the mist of pain and musk so she gathered the small amount of strength she had and rocked her herself from side to side, and fell. As she hit the ground, she made sure that her head was tilted in a way that it wouldn't obtain any injuries but she didn't care much about the other parts of her body. Thus, when the right side of her body came into connect with the floor; a loud crack from several areas of her body engulfed the silent room. Footsteps rushed to her side, but instead of lifting her from the front so that she could she its face; it picked her off the floor from behind. Dr Lin felt defeated that her strategy didn't work and now she obtained more injuries and pain. "You're not getting out of here anytime soon but if you want to hurt yourself be my guest, at least it will save me some work when it comes to killing you....", the voice said. Dr Lin heard it walk away; taking the only light that shined hope into her with it. She sat once again in darkness but this time she was surrounded in a puddle her own foolishness.

Mrs Lan walked into her living room exhausted from the travel and lay on the sofa; a maid brought a glass of water out in front of her and she immediately took it and devoured it in a minute; stretching out the glass to the maid as a sign to fill it up again. Once the maid had returned with another glass of water, Mrs Lan was already fast asleep, oh so she thought as her right arm covered her eyes; she left the water on the table and as she silently walked back to the kitchen; she heard the glass being placed on the table and as she turned, she saw it half empty. She had began to retrace her steps back to refill the glass once more but Mrs Lan's hand came up and waved her away.
"Mum!. It's you, why are you still up its 3am", a voice came from the hallway. "I was wondering who had left the lights on in here since I know you all should be asleep by now", it said; stumbling to the sofa. "Sophia! Sophia!", it shouted towards the kitchen and moments later, out came the maid.
"Yes Miss Lisa", the maid bowed and took out a notepad with a pen attached to it.
"Sophia, go home. That's it for today, if she needs anything she'll just have to make it herself", Mrs Lan said as she sat up.
"But Mrs....", the maid began to insist.
"Last time I checked, I'm the one who hired you. So if I say that's it for today, that means for everyone in this family so go home", Mrs Lan persisted. Sophia took one look at Lisa and bowed before walking away; gathering her things and leaving the mansion.
"Mum, I don't like how you just let her off like that. She is a maid and she is here to attend to our every need, right?", Lisa said as she fixed her hair.
"How about you get your own place and hire your own maids, then you get to boss them around for 24hrs with no end", her mother said; drinking the last half of her water.
"She's here to work and you letting her go home doesn't really fit the definition of working", she urged.
"Like I said, hire your own maids and you can tell them when to get off work", her mother said to her as she got up; taking the empty glass with her.
"Then I will", Lisa insisted.
"With your own money that is", Mrs Lan said as she entered the kitchen. Lisa looked at her mother; who's back was turned against her and imagined throwing one of her heels at her head. Although the thought of it made her smile, she'd become poor if her mother was to stop giving her weekly allowances; thus, she brushed the thought away; took off her heels and stretched out on the sofa.
"Got to bed it's late", her mother said as she came back into the living room. Lisa looked up at her with one eye open; sat up; took her heels and clutch bag; and went upstairs.
"That Sophia, I could have been enjoying some freshly made chocolate muffins with cream by now if she hadn't decided to obey my Mum over me. Just you wait Sophia, you'll surely come to work tomorrow and meet me", she fumed as she threw herself on the bed the minute she entered her room.
