Katoph: In Between the Lines

[A/N] Hello there, this is Katoph: In Between the Lines! This fan fiction will contain any Katoph (Katara x Toph) stories that I like to think happened in between the lines (haha) of the main episodes. If you haven't already noticed, I'll be going in order of the show— obvious from the title of this chapter.

But without any further delays, enjoy the first chapter. It's short and sweet, haha.

[A/N from the future] It's only dawned to me now (after publishing The Serpent's Pass chapter) how long it'll take me before I actually finish this story.

Soaring over the Earth Kingdom, Team Avatar sat silently on Appa. It was a chilly and peaceful type of night. The stars seemed to shine brighter after adding another piece to the team.

Of course, Sokka was fast asleep in the saddle. As for Aang, he was passed out on Appa's head— a little dangerous. Fortunately enough, Appa was smart. He knew where to land.

This left the two girls to stare aimlessly into the night sky— or, at least, this left Katara to admire the stars.

"Toph, you're still up," Katara noticed, diverting her attention from the stars and to Toph. She kept her head on her crossed arms.

"You are too," she replied, appearing to be staring down at the ground— not that she could see anyways. Perhaps she was longing for it.

"Is there something wrong?" Katara began inching closer to Toph.

"No," she turned towards Katara, "I don't know. I guess I'm not used to flying. Let alone being miles away from home." She scrunched her eyebrows together, her bangs more or less hiding her pout.

"I understand how you feel. I remember how it was like leaving home," Katara leveled her head with Toph's. Her breath warmed Toph's ear. This made Toph blush. Not wanting Katara to see, she turned her head the slightest degree from her. "I was scared. Frighted, even. But then I remembered that I have a family here with Sokka and Aang. People who I now grow to love."

"Thanks Katara," she replied, her hair hiding her relished and ambiguous smile. Immediately, she felt a hand on top of hers. It was soothing. Yet, it shot another uneasy feeling through Toph, making her stomach turn. She felt her heart beating a little faster. First the blush, now this... What might this mean for Toph? It may just be because Toph has never been intimate with anyone in this way— not in the way where it makes your heart go crazy. At the very least, she hoped it was nothing more than that.

"You should get some rest," Katara smiled, gripping Toph's hand a little tighter, "you need it. Especially after kicking grown men butts today."

"You should too," Toph replied, yawning. "Goodnight Katara," she murmured. Slowly, she brought herself down to lay down. Then, she shut her eyes.

Katara watched as the young earth prodigy fell fast asleep. She was finally happy to have a girl in the group. Maybe too happy.
